They are the only black pebbles/stones you usually see on the ground, you can't miss it.

From then on you need the mining skill to get better hardness stones.
Obsidian is 1 step higher but in my game I just jumped to steel because I found an ore vein I could mine with my basalt pick.

Once you have steel and high enough mining skill, you'll probably be able to mine anything in the normal difficulty zones.

Mining is based on pickaxe level and mining level, you can level up mining by digging stone to make your base for exemple but having a good pickaxe does help

From the wiki:
Basalt (hardness 52): Black stone. It is the hardest of all stones.
Iron (hardness 56): Often found in the early layers of Nefia and Vernis mine. Iron ore can also be obtained from machine monster drops.
Obsidian (hardness 60): The hardest ore found in Vernis mine. The appearance rate is low, so you can compromise with iron.
Steel (hardness 67): Steel ores begin to appear around the 30th danger levels. Metal monsters drop steel ore, so if you are lucky, you can obtain it from the beginning of the season. It can also be obtained by digging through the floors and pillars of Aquli Teola. Depending on the hardness of the tool, you can dig if you have a mining or digging skill of around 25.
Chromite (hardness 85): Black ore. Can be obtained by dismantling TVs and TV stands in Palmia. A steel hammer can be dismantled with a crafting skill of 13 or more.
Meteorite (hardness 95): Dull purple ore. It can be dug in Permafrost, but beware of tough enemies.
Rubynus (hardness 110): obtained by dismantling rubynus equipment picked up in Nefia with a hammer or by breaking casino walls. Depending on the hardness of the pickaxe, mining the walls of the casino requires a mining skill of around 40. You can also get it from dismantling Rubynus equipment picked or the red orbs in Palmia and Lumiest with a hammer. Can be mined rarely.
Ether (hardness 120): An ingot can be obtained by dismantling the Prince's Bed in Palmia, and a gem can be obtained by dismantling the moongate given by Nino in Tinker's Camp.

Basalt shoud be your goal rn they can be find from time to time in the wild and in nefia.

When looking for basalt, look for piles of black rocks laying on the ground. These stones can be harvested without the mining requirement that stalagmites or ore deposits require.

They should be able to appear just about anywhere, but you can try looking in brown mountain tiles.

Anywhere that's randomly generated can have them. They aren't really something you seek out, they're more like something that you keep an eye out for. Though I think stones spawn more commonly in brown mountain tiles, so you're more likely to find them there.

There is something else you can do though: craft a Hammer and use it to dismantle metal or stone things and use those to make better tools. Hammer's effective hardness increases with your Crafting skill like how the Pickaxe's effective hardness increases with Mining skill. This is more reliable because towns are always generated the same, so you can reliably find what you're looking for.

Slate is a pretty dark gray though. But it's still far better than granite anyway.

using a Basalt pickaxe to mine copper if it's inside a wall of dirt it requires at least level 10 mining bronze is around 15 iron is around 20 to like 25 Obsidian his level 50 silver and gold unknown cuz I haven't found any of that in walls yet I know tin probably exists it's either lower or the same with copper ore if it exists I haven't seen it
rocks of iron ore I believe you can mine them around level 15 with a Basalt pickaxe

a Basalt hammer and pickaxe is the best you can get for a very long time a lot of the materials you mine are inferior and hardness tell you get up to iron or Steel

You can also mine the fences on the top level of the casino for a bunch of easy topaz ingots (60 hardness) that should last you til you can mine the rubynus walls on the inside.

No it doesn't. You need 6.
For mining ore in walls, required effective hardness is (ore's hardness * 1.5 + 10), and each rank of Mining gives 1.5 effective hardness. Copper has 34 hardness, so the required effective is 61, compared to Basalt's 52, so you need 6 Mining.
Big rocks (the standalone ore rocks) need (big rock's hardness + 10)

If you're trying to get the materials by mining, yes. But you can get better tool materials with the Hammer, which doesn't have as high of a skill requirement to utilize on harder materials.

where do you get the skill for breaking things down because right now the hardness of the hammer is the maximum I currently can do there's a lot of stuff I can't break down with a hammer

Hammer uses crafting skill.

thank you guys, all of your advices are legit but i did it by training my mining. i couldnt find basalt stones on the ground so i trained my mining by mining regular dirt walls in caves until 15 then i could mine stagmiletes of basalt then with it i can mine copper now
