Trainer question.
I couldn't figure out on my own if there is a way to know when you "really" need a trainer.
Does anyone know if it's possible to know?

What do you mean really need a trainer?

I mean, you need a trainer to learn skills you didn't start with, at least without relying on RNG of finding skill books.

Otherwise, you only go to a trainer if you want to increase your skill's Potential. (Skill EXP Multiplier)

I guess that'd be up to you if you need the boost.
But if you have the platinum coins to spare, no reason to not train a skill so you can level it up a bit faster.

So for training, there are multiple parts to it.
The first part, is whether you actually have the skill or not. If you don't have the skill, it's better to go to the trainer asap to learn it. (or you could luck out and find a skillbook in the dungeon for it).

After that point there are two parts. One, is your "base" potential for that skill. This represents how quickly you learn the skill. Though I don't know the exact formulae, I would guess that "100" means "100% rate", so anything beyond or lower than that would be a modifier.

Then you have training potential, which is what you get from the trainers when you train a skill that you already have (you also get this from food (for attributes, not skills), and various other sources). This adds a temporary bonus growth rate to that skill. You can view the base and training potentials by hovering over the skill. This potential decreases as you use and raise the skill on your own.

As for "when" to train (beyond the initial learning the skill), that's entirely up to you. The higher your training potential is, the more it will cost in platinum to increase it further, so it really depends on how badly you want to raise a skill how quickly.

I mean how the math involved in training works :-)

Perfect.

Also, the positive mutations for Memorization and Regeneration are treated as raising your base stat, rather than giving it a bonus, so if you have those then those skills will train. After they gain a full rank through training you'll permanently learn how to train it, even if you lose the mutation (and correspondingly the skill trainers will train potential rather than enabling it).

Hey, that's pretty neat!
That's like how skills gained through Genes work, for allies.

AFAIK, only other use to platinum coins (yet) besides learning new skills and very shortly upgrading your learning rate (I mean, you lose like 30 potential per lvl up...) is to buy lucky coins at Palmia's castle, to get permanent 20 luck increase, which means 20% of all dices affecting you getting rerolled to keep the best result of the two dices.

You'll need 1000 platinums to reach the +20 luck, so up to you if you thinks it's worth it or not.

dont use books to teach yourself a skill. save those books to teach your pet the skill.
you can learn the skills from trainers but for pets only books work so far

Hello !
What about skills that I don't have but my worshiped gods granted me ?

I started as pianist with no farming or weaving skills but I found the altar for the Kumiromi of Harvest (if I'm not mistaken) that granted me both. I want to know if I still need to go to said trainers before I can accumulate exp from farming and weaving, or can I just craft a couple of textile products to raise the skill levels and skip the 'unlocking skill' part ?

Bonuses from external sources won't allow you to learn a skill. It's just that the mutations (and genes for pets) add to the base value rather than as a bonus value, so they allow learning.

Ah crap, i've farmed a lot of tomatoes and made a bunch of pouches before realizing I dont start with these two skills. Dahahah

At least both of those skills are taught by trainers relatively close to the starting Meadow.
Weaving is taught down in Olvina, along with many other Crafting skills.
Farming is taught over in Yowyn, a bit northeast of Tinker's Camp.

Even if your god boosts those skills to useable levels, at least after learning them for real you'll be able to train them and gain some stats from the skill exp gains that way.

Ya, but the exp from the past tomatoes and pouches are wasted.
I thought I didn't need to 'unlock' skills as long as I keep accumulating it, for example I suddenly gotten +1 and +2 tomato seeds when reaping them with a sickle but it turned out just its just the effect of worshiping the god.
