How does aftertouch work?

I am using a 360 wireless controller. I'm having trouble scoring, with both long shots and close finishes. Any advice appreciated. thanks.

Use the left/right on the stick to bend the ball after it has left your foot. There's no banana kicks (maybe after you've trained up) but a decent curl will beat the keepers.

Aim one direction, shoot, wait until the ball has left your foot, then apply aftertouch with the controller. Backwards = up/lob/"topspin", left & right = curve. I don't know if 'forwards' gets you extra power or makes the shot go lower or something.
