Thats probably what happened to you, and as you've noticed, at the wrong time it can hurt quite a bit :)
From what I gather from the OP his doors did open, but the fire didn`t asphyxiate. It does take a little while for the oxygen to drain and even then fire can burn for a few seconds. I assume he just got really unlucky.
If you had the O2 still running - or worse - as I often upgrade it to two bars just to decrease the boredom of waiting for it to replenish - if you have it upgraded AND running, the oxygen can be very slow to leave the ship - in some cases (Breach weapons) the air leaving and air coming in will balance - so clearly it is powerful enough to keep those fires burning longer - even with the doors all open - than if you had shut it all the way off.
There's also a physics aspect to it - the fire will continue to spread TOWARD the open airlock as long as the air is still draining away. Picture it being sucked toward the vacuum along with everything else.
