But how much this plays a role has a lot to do with what you're shooting to begin with and/or whether or not the target's engine/helm is taken down.
Good point. Never thought about that.
But which one is better depends on your ship and the other weapons you have. If you don't have the means to penetrate strong shields with other weapons I think it is better to have a missile that takes a shorter time to reload. This allows you to disable shields/weapons quickly. If time doesn't matter because you are sufficiently equipped choose the Hermes.
2 missiles, if both hit, is 4 points damage, and will take down a 4 point shield plus any leakthru.
A 3 point missile will never take down a 4 point shield, unless the leakthru damage hit the shield generator.
If your other weapon hits right after the misile, you'll do more damage due to the down shield.
Defence Drone can shoot down Hermes every single time, but against Pegasus it can only shoot down 1 out of the 2 missles.
I am fed up with this game. I've died 4 times now all randomly. It's stupid to get matched against someone so much better than you without any hope to survive. I like my games to have skill over luck so I don't think I'll be playing much longer unless they somehow fix it. Gonna try Space Pirates and Zombies. (I know it's not the same, but at least you need skill and not luck for it).
What are you talking about exactly? What Leakthrough? Missiles pass through shields without problems(assuming we're not talking Zoltan shields here). And when you say points, do you mean the actual shield pips or the energy pips on the meter in the bottom? If it is the first it will still take down 2 shield pips, which is a boon unless you're relying only on one missile launcher. If you meant the latter, it takes down the only two shield layers the ship has.
I think, you just missing some upgrades. On easy, with right decidions you shouldn't have problem killing anyone except final boss. And even if you will - you can jump away. Maybe, you rushing sectors without exploring?
I dunno, that game has a pretty big element of luck too in my experience. After all, you have to be able to hunt down multiple copies of a ship type before you can add it to your own fleet. You also have to be lucky enough to find stations selling the weapons/armor you need to compete in higher level areas.
The progression may be linear (just don't go to a higher level area and you won't run into impossible fights) and the combat may involve a BIT more skill but there's deffinately plenty of luck involved. At least in determining how long you'll have to play each run before having what you need to finish the game.
FTL is a game that FEELS luck-heavy at first, but isn't in reality. Good enough play will win you the game virtually every time, with any ship even on Hard. This has been demonstrated by NoQuitt, myself, and BillyKirby - all of us have won 25+ times in a row on Hard, without a single reset, with a different ship every time.
Basically, luck will help a worse player win, but luck will almost never cause a good enough player to lose on its own.
As for the original question, the answer is actually 'neither'. Both are bad weapons you almost never want to use in a standard run.
