Don't buy scrap recovery arms.
I never buy scrap recovery. You have to get 500 scrap just to get the 50 back you paid for it. You would be tempted to think the earlier in the game you get it the better. But 50 scrap is worth much more early in the game that later. You can buy level 2 shields for 50 scrap. Having 3 just means you would need 1500 scrap to get back the 150 you paid for them. If I get one free I keep it of course. Never buy them.

Some ships can easily skip buying shields. Buying SRA will of course bring in rewards only in the late sectors, but there's also a blue event for it.

Avg. 50 scrap per ship after sector 5, that's 10 ships worth, or about one sector's worth of encounters to recoup initial outlay. After that it's all profit. Always buy them.

They're perfectly worthwhile purchases, and in the long run, you will profit from having one.

I didn't say you wouldn't end up with more scrap in the long run. What I said is 50 scrap is worth far more in the early game when you are paying out the 50 than 50 is at the end of the game when you are getting your 50 back. 50 is enough for a crewmember or a weapon. At the end 50 won't buy you one weapon upgrade.

Your arguement that 50 isn't worth enough to matter goes both ways. You will have to take in 1000 scrap post buying the arm to earn 50 scrap. If it not worth it when you are buying it it's not worth it when you are getting it back either.

No it takes 500 to get your 50 back and other 500 after that to get 50 more than you would have gotten anyway.

It takes 500 scrap pre-bonus to get 50 extra scrap, the cost of an arm.

Right but 50 only gets you what you paid for it back.
SpiderKhan Jul 15, 2014 @ 7:30pm
then you just sell it in sector 7/8 for 25 scrap back, which is possible most of the time.

so in theory if you decide to turn it around and sell it and are able to do so (which is usually true), you need to make only 250 scrap to begin the profitting.

If you sell it you stop the profiting. Also when has 25 scrap been real important in sector 8?
Yeah I often do what Fighter above me said. Makes the Scrap recovery arm just allow for pretty good profit early game.

And every other bit of scrap after that is pure profit.

if you have 3 scrap recovery arms arms early on you will be rich at the end game then you can sell them off around sector 7 for 25 scrap each

A scrap recovery arm will also get you 20-30 scrap when you find an asteroid field you can explore. That's a pretty common event.
