And then there's convoy:

You aren't in space, but you are on another planet. Your ship crashed and you have a convoy to go and rebuild the ship so you can return to space. It's a neat twist with different variables in combat (vehicle ramming, etc). You also buy/sell vehicles/weapons for the convoy as you progress.
Those are the two most like it that I can think of.
Similar but different is Crying suns, the progress is FTL, but the combat is RTS

And this isn't what you asked for, but from the same developer as FTL is Into the Breach, which you might also like:

And more about building your own ships:

You get to build your ship from scratch

It's first person, but basically you choose a faction and ship and go around the galaxy exploring and managing your ship and your crew. Each member has a specific role and skills to go with that role. You can pick up quests, or just free roam and be a space pirate or whatever. Very fun experience with friends once you get the hang of it.
This game is constantly being upgraded with new content and tweaks, even after 2 years. I've never seen this level of ongoing support for a game.
Just got done playing this and I agree, it's very impressive the level of dedication that dev has to the game and the community. I think he personally replies to every post on the forums, and he fixes bugs and implements community-suggested features like once/week. It's really neat to watch. The game is like a sandbox space RPG (kinda dungeons & dragons style, lotta dice rolls). It's a pretty nuanced and deep game, and the dev has done a great job giving the player tons of different ways to play the game / tons of different activities to pursue.
