Unable to play co-op
I've seen other posts about this so I'll add my own input and ask for feedback, please.

A friend and I researched co-op PC games specifically so we could play together and came upon Ghost Recon Future Soldier as a game to try. We each forked out £15 for the deluxe edition.

Neither of us can get it to work for either Guerilla or Co-Op Campaign, as we get the message about failing to connect to the host. We can both play Multiplayer just fine. I should say right off the bat that we are not on a LAN but both on broadband and in the UK.

Things we have tried:

1 - Portforwarding all the ports listed at every location we can find, for both the game and for uplay.

2 - Opening up our Firewall to allow both the game and uplay to go through, both public and private.

3 - Setting our firewall incoming rules to "Allow Edge Traversal" (as recommended in a couple of forum posts where others are having the same problem).

4 - Removing each other from Friends in both the game and uplay, then adding each other just in the game.

5 - As above but just adding each other in uplay.

6 - Removing uplay, telling Steam to check file integrity and allowing uplay to be redownloaded and updated.

7 - Checked we both have the same version numbers for the game and uplay.

8 - Turning our Firewall's off completely

9 - Disabling anti-virus software (McAfee on one and Avast on the other).

I'm now out of ideas and also at the end of the line. If we can't get the game to run, I'm going to email Ubisoft and ask for a couple of refunds, which would be a shame. But I really would like to get it to work, if anyone has other ideas please?

Thanks,

H

Let me revive this topic with solution that worked for me. Everything else you did to make it work was probably random, because in fact ability to invite friend to co-op is currently random.

After quite a lot of hours wasted looking for some solution or at least understand the problem I think I got it. As I bought Future Soldier sorely for co-op with my friend and it worked almost right away, when we could not connect again the next day I wanted to solve it. After many trials we were able to isolate issue to problems with certain servers.
Server that works: 185.38.21.82 ( Ubisoft International SAS )
Servers that were never able to connect GRFS coop game: 185.38.21.83 185.38.21.84 185.38.21.85
Solution:
1. Make sure you have only one network adapter running (any VPN, hamachi and others are causing "failed to connect to host" problem)
2. Go to your firewall (either Windows Firewall or other you are using instead) and block IPs 185.38.21.83-85
3. Start Uplay and the game. If you want to verify that it worked correctly, you can verify that the game is connected to 185.38.21.82 using network traffic monitor like:
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/live_tcp_udp_watch.html
4. Now invitations and everything should work. It's slow, takes sometimes around 10-15 seconds to receive invitation but then it works.
It seems like other Ubisoft servers are not handling connections properly, only when both players are connected to proper server it starts to work. It also seems that either Uplay or the game itself is checking server response so blocking other IPs causes game to load the only one we left not blocked. This way both players can safely connect to the same server which handles co-op properly. Don't ask me how we found this solution.
Some facts:
1. Removing friends from Uplay does not matter.
2. Uplay has to be running to see friend status properly in game.
3. Fetching list of users takes some time. Just type your friend name in search box and wait around half a minute, it will show up always. Invitations also take around half a minute.
4. Restarting Uplay, game, computer etc does not change anything besides possibility that this time you may connect to proper server. That's why in our case game was connecting sometimes a few times in a row (working server has less latency) and sometimes no matter how much we try it was not connecting (other servers had better latency and those did not handle the game).
I wanted to play Ghost Recon many years ago but somehow I could not get it when first ones were out. Recently I wanted to play GRAW and GRAW2 but those don't work anymore, you can't even buy them on Ubisoft store. Future Soldier was oldest one I picked and gameplay is... ok. Only responsiveness and controls aged a bit but the game looks quite amazing.
I'm going to post this solution also in different high results from google so others can finally enjoy this game with their friends. I'm sure many of you resigned from co-op experience just because of server errors. It's not guaranteed that it will work forever, IPs may change, server configurations may change. Anyways, it was quite stable recently, I'll maybe update this topic when we test it a bit more. Most important is that we were able to rule out different scenarios that did not matter.
One more thing to check again would be trying out running it with different server but also blocking other ones to make sure you only have connection to one of them. I've seen that game is actually connecting to two different Ubisoft servers but in cases when we connected to the same 83-85 servers, it did not work as well. It only worked with connection through 82.

Thank you! Saved my coop campaign.

Random suggestion.
Did you tried deleting the host file located in
windows/system32/drivers/etc ?

Yeah I did, but I appreciate you asking.

My freinds and I got the same issue and have tried most of the method you've listed. This happened to us after the last patch.

I had that same problem and one of my friends advised me to delete the names from the friends list in Uplay and only add friends in the game which I did and since then I can play with any friend I invite or who invites me.
Hope it also works for you guys :))

Yeah I tried that but it didn't work, but I appreciate you taking the time to tell us, thanks mate.

Have the same problem OP. Tried relentless for 3 days to get this to work with my friend. Co-op being the sole purchase reason behind the game. Tried asking steam for a refund but they wouldn't make it happen. Ubisoft complains about pirates killing their PC sales but when they do develop (port) it PC they totally cripple it with DRM and hosted servers.

Hope you find an answer. I've given up and uninstalled the game, most likely never going to play it.

@ Heron: Did you try to reinstall the game? If you did, did you get all the updates correctly?
Sometimes a reinstall can do the trick, but for that you really need to clean your system from any "leftovers" from the game. Also make sure you have a backup or copy of your game saves.
The game saves are located in your Documents folder.
BTW is your copy a downloaded one or did you buy a hard copy? Some people can have problems with downloaded copies. Files can be or get corrupted during download.
I'm saying this because I have an issue with the Arctic Strike DLC. I payed for it and I still can't get it downloaded properly let alone install it. Ubisoft won't help me with that so, I just payed for something I can't use.
One of my friends couldn't connect to us because he installed all the updates in some way incorrectly. Now he's able to connect and play with us.
Hope you get it working as well :)

Hi mate, thanks for that detailed response. I have tried reinstalling it (it was a download version from Steam) but I draw the line at reformattting my computer to try that :)

I guess this is just a waste of money, sadly.

With the number of gamers having problems with it, it would be nice to have an official workaround or something.

Hey ho.
rico686 May 6, 2013 @ 2:05pm
Hey Heron, with reinstall I just meant the game, not reformatting the system LOL.
I would draw that line as well for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up game like this one and you're right it's just a waste of money if Ubisoft don't come up with a proper solution :(

When reinstalling the game, you first need to make a copy of all your save game files and (just in case) also a backup of all the Ubisoft files which can be found in several folders.
There are Ubisoft folders in Program Files x86, Local, Roaming, Documents.
When uninstalling uncheck the box for saving the personal settings (that's why you need to make that backup first). If you don't delelte your personal settings, you'll have the same ♥♥♥♥ again. It needs to be like a clean install.

What I did is install all the patches one after another just by starting the game again every time once an update/patch is installed. Having all that done I start the game again and invited my friends to join a game and then it worked. Don't exactly know how or why it suddenly worked, but it works for me.
Hope you get it to work mate :)

So uhm....can we keep trying to figure this out?

Me and a friend of mine, buyed this game in the summer sales recently to play it in coop mode. We have the same problem, error, unable to connect or something like that. We tried everything like forwarding ports, "Host" file, disable antivirus, firewall... without success. The point is that both of us can play in multiplayer mode without any problem, just like most of you, but at coop mode we encounter the damned "error". We are trying now to delete both from the friend list, although this it seems to me like the old capcom combinations for a cheat ;) not the support of a serious company like ubisoft would have to be.
PD: sorry for my english
