The RP community is bigger and better. DDO has some great RP guilds, but RP is mostly done in private within the guild. LOTRO has dedicated RP servers where everybody RPs in public - very refreshing and much more inviting.
LOTRO also has the bells and whistles that DDO lacks, like player-owned housing and horses.
Oh - and you can actually SIT in the damned CHAIRS. *cue laughter from all the DDO refugees*
You probably ought to try them both f2p, then go p2p when you decide which one you like better.
I don't like the game that much anymore, but it's still one of the best mmo's out there. I just hope this one will also be awesome so I got something else to spend time with while on my computer.
