LOTRO Guide to F2P/Premium
LOTRO Guide to F2P/Premium
So LOTRO is a free to play game but this is not like other modern free to play games that give you all quests ect free to max lv on lotro you do have to pay to lv up (- insane grind) I will tell you here what is the best way to play lotro as F2P/Premium.

[Quest Packs]
So to start you can maybe get to about lv 30 ish before you must buy a quest pack to continue, quest packs are sold in the lotro store for about £3-6 and these are account wide and permanent, once you buy a quest zone you may play it forever. So using this method you can buy all content and lv and play through these unlimited like a lifetime sub.

[Traits/Virtues]
In LOTRO traits are similar to talents ect in other mmo's as you lv in lotro you will be able to unlock trait slots for 95 Turbine points (store cash) each, as you can imagine this can get quite expensive and will cost you about 1600 TP in total per char to unlock. BUT if you subscribe to the game for 1 month and then cancel you will unlock all these traits and vitue slots even if your char is low lv and not got to them yet as long as you log in that char once while you have a sub.

That’s why the best way to start LOTRO F2P is to sub ONCE make as many chars as you can with the classes and names you want, then log into each char for a few mins and then go back to your main, then when you go to play this char in the future he will have all his traits and virts unlocks and saves you 1600 TP per char.

[Quick Travel]
LOTRO has a stables/quick travel system like WoW's flying or SWTOR speeders, but as F2P you will not be able to use these and it makes getting about the game world very very slow having to travel from post to post 1 by 1 manually taking forever, quck travel is instant and can cover massive distances instantly but this option is only available to subscriber’s ( or item store consumable ) BUT if like in the previous part you SUB at least ONCE you will fully permanently unlock this quick travel so don’t forget to log each char onCe you have a sub :)

[Expansion Packs]
LOTRO has 4 very fun expansion packs, some small and some huge, moria is one of the most fun expansions ive ever played and rohan is massive and epic, expansions must be bought and can be bought in store as quest packs with TP or as digital download expansions.

There is a triple expansion pack on steam and on the LOTRO website store and then the rohan expansion is separate, once you have bought an expansion you can log in and play ALL the content that comes with said expansion without a sub (age of conan >.<) so like quest packs you have this content free forever and unlimited account wide.

[Subscription]
So as you have already read subbing for a single month is very very good even for F2P and will also unlock many other features like gold cap removal, more Bags and 500 FREE Turbine Points a Month.

Myself i bought a bunch of TP and went Premium/F2P and bought every quest pack, skirmish and expansion so i can play as long as i want, when i want forever without having to sub on and off when i feel like taking a break or coming back for a few days in between other games, this is a big weight off my shoulders.

But if you do wish to go down the SUB path for £8.99 a month as long as you stay subbed you will have all quests (NOT expansions) unlocked.

I hope this helps those new to the game that are going down the F2P/Premium path.

UPDATES:

[Mounts and travel]
I think it is still like this but I haven't checked for a long time - correct me if I am wrong)
As a sub you can get a quest (at level 20) which unlocks for free the riding skill, which is otherwise sold for TPs in the store (one per character). This means that, at least for your main, it is worth getting to lvl 20 while you are a sub.

[Free TPs sources in game]
It is worth doing deeds (exploration, killing, questing and reputation) in each area you own because they are a good source of free TPs and virtues. When I first run through LotRO, I put together around 1000 TP with the deeds in the free zones (Ered Luin, Shire, Bree Land and Lone Lands). Deeds are a possible but very slow way to gain TP with each deed giving 5-10 TP each.

Yea its a pretty old school combat like old wow but after playing gw2 for a while i just cba with action none trinity combat anymore, ill always prefer a tank heal dps combo over HODOR ROLL :P anyday. What keeps me into lotro more than the combat is the story and quests, no other game can top that imo.

You will also get a title for the first tier, and a virtue for the second tier of a slayer deed.
(I don't care about the title; My favourite comes from an item), but the virtue is something you shouldn't overlook.

I agree that killing 300 worms is no fun though...
