The Lord of the Rings Online™

LOTRO population.
Okay, i'm thinking about downloading this game but i am wondering if there are still many people playing it. I want to choose between this and Everquest 2. How big is the population compared to Everquest 2?

if you roll a cappy, lm, mini, rk, or guard you will almost always find a place in a group. Wardens can be epic but they are sometimes to squishy....

Squishy? I'll show you SQUISHY!
*steps on LM*

I can vouch for Lore Masters being squishy. It is my main and the first class I had ever played in an MMO. I died over and over in the beginning - horrid deaths at the paws of wolves, sickle fly stings and those nasty, nasty goblins. And that was all before I got to level 10. :)

I don't find my Warden to be anywhere near as squishy but I also must admit that I can now play a Lore Master to level 20 without dying as well. You know what they say....

Practice makes perfect!

Well I am not perfect at playing an LM yet, but hey... I am working on it.

Have fun
I've always played on Nimrodel, because that's where all my friends are, but been thinking about checking out a higher population server just to see the difference. Does seem a bit lonely sometimes, but maybe it's because I'm not too high level yet.

Ok. But how would you people compare this to Everquest II?

Well, Everquest II is amazing, but it feels a bit disconnected, and the skills trees are insanely complex.
Crafting on EQ II is really involving; you have to counter bad effects in time, or you might die from failure.
There is A LOT to explore, and a gazillion quests to do, and the lore is great.

LotRO is easier to get into. Crafting is just a case of having the right materials, and hitting 'go' sadly.
The lore is amazing (if you are into Tolkien), and the epic questline is really cool.

For F2P, there are quite heavy limits on EQ II. No legendary equipment, no spells beyond master level, limited bag space, Gold cap, no auction house etc.

For LotRO there are also limits for F2P: No mounts, gold cap, no auction house, limited bag space, only a few areas are free (have their quests available).
The good news is that for LotRO you can earn TP (Turbine Points, the real money currency) for doing quests & deeds in game. So by the time you reach L30 (and you are around finishing the free content), you have enough TP to buy another area, or a horse, or a shared storage, or a gold cap removal.
You can grind the low level deeds & quests with new chars until you have enough to buy you full expansions even. (although that will take determination).

For guilds/kinships I'd say both games are on par: I found nice people on both.
What I do like from LotRO is that you see a lot of people banding together for a while for common goals (fellowships). The game is more social than EQ II

I would suggest trying both for a month (or more) and see which you like best.

The LotRO servers I tried (Crickhollow, Meneldor, Withywindle) are all quite busy (Meneldor tends to have more new players at the moment, and Crickhollow has some great musicians playing regularly in Bree)
Landroval is also a busy server with great musicians. This Saturday, The Lonely Mountain Band kinship is hosting the annual server event, Weatherstock. Weatherstock is the largest server held event in Lotro and is a battle of ingame bands on the top of Weatherstock. So if you are on Landroval or want to role an alt to attend, the starting time is 1pm Server time, July 20. There is security so any low level/under level characters will be safe.

Have fun

No one has mentioned Laurelin yet: it is one of the (mostly) EU servers (labelled as EN-RP, to be precise), and it appears well populated (at evening GMT / GMT+1 times, at least, which is when I usually play). My personal feeling is that most players are at the level cap, though, since most of the grouping is asked for end-game content. However, I get back to starting areas from time to time, and it is nice to see some new players, or old ones coming back to roll an alt.
I have given a try to EQ2 and I enjoyed it, although I didn't spend much more than a couple of months in there: I am quite stuck in Tolkien's lore, that's why I end up coming back to LotRO ;)
Thanks for the info. this helped me decide to download it. thanks for starting this OP

Thanks, all of you. I'll download this game right away. Not from steam though.
While there are not tons of people around, I still see plenty on the European shards I play on.
I just got the game. It seems nice. It lags sometimes for a few seconds. I don't know why.
