Expansion Packs for LotRO

Apologies if there is a similar discussion. As the title says how important are the expansion packs in this game, I played LotRO roughly over 2 years ago and I cant quite remeber what state the game was in then at that time.

As I am thinking about getting back into the game is it worth/do I need to buy the expansion packs to progress to end game? Skimming through threads I think I am right saying that any F2P player can reach max level like any one who has these packs or is a VIP but do you benefit enough to warrant buying them?

1- I would strongly recommend you visit the LOTRO forums -- {ENLACE ELIMINADO}Forums.lotro.com this topic is frequently discussed.

2- {ENLACE ELIMINADO}lotro-wiki.com also has a section on the "LOTRO store" which lists all of the different quest packs and expansion packs currently available from the in-game LOTRO-Store.

3- {ENLACE ELIMINADO}store.turbine.com -- has the current "direct from Turbine" offerings.
It current lists several differnt "bundles" of content.

4- The 3 previous expansion packs are:
MInes of Moria
Siege of Mirkwood
Rise of Isengard

5- Riders of Rohan is the 4th Expansion

6- Your old account still exists.... you merely need to reactivate it. -- If you were a player prior to F2P, you are automatically a Premium Player, because you purchased something!

7- as for F2P making it to 85... yeah, it's possible, however it is difficult and you will not have many different pieces available (like instances, raids and the like.)

If you don't get the expansion packs, the zones will have very little for you to do in them except for the epic quest line. The epic quests are great content, but they are not enough to level your character all the way to 85 by themselves, so you would have to grind your way through to the end, repeating skirmishes over and over or something equally numbing. If you don't have any interest in running dungeons, you can save money by just getting the quest pack instead of the whole expansion. The dungeons are great though, and of course the best loot is in the dungeons. Turbine has periodic sales on both points and content packs, so if you're not in a hurry you can pick your moment to get the best deal.

Thanks for that, can you give us a rough idea of how much a quest pack cost? (I like dungeons but am not so bothered about til end game) I think I am right in saying that you can earn TP as F2P player by doing deed quests, if thats the case do you earn enough to buy QPacks that way? I dont want to sound stingy but I dont really want to buy to many things just to play the game to reasonable level when there are other good F2P games out there (am playing GW2 but just taking a break to recharge myself XD). LotRO will be more of a casual pop in/pop out game for me so buying Xpacks isnt really I want.

If you buy an expansion on steam, you get a "CD Key" added to the game in Steam. You then enter that on your Turbine account page to register the expansion. Easy as pie.

Note: in the case of Rohan, Steam only has the Heroic Edition; you may want to check out the other editions in the Turbine store to see which appeals more (http://store.turbine.com/store/turbine/en_US/list/categoryID.58733200/parentCategoryID.58516200).
Note: some of these include a few pre-Moria quest packs, which would allow you to do quests to level without having to subscribe or buy quest packs.

Getting the Moria triple pack is definitely worth it though, even at low level, since you get a nice horse (for use once you finish the introduction; still need to either pay 95tp (easily achieved for free from deeds) for the riding skill), a boost to your skirmish level cap, 2 extra character slots, and access to the two final classes (Warden and Runekeeper, both fun to play).

Aside from all that, it can also be a good idea to subscribe, even if it's only for 1 month, since this unlocks swift travel at stables and removes your gold cap (without removing the cap this way or via buying the unlock in the store, you can't hold more than 2 gold).

Basically, it's about $6-$8 per zone. Remember that you can get both TP and zones on sale also, and the more TP you buy at once, the bigger a discount you get. You can buy TP for as little as $.08 a point, and if you then use that TP to buy zones on sale, a good deal becomes a great deal. Everyone earns TP in game for completing deeds, but it is a small amount, usually 5-20 TP at a time. I've known people who got all their TP this way, but they spent a lot of time grinding out deeds, which turns the game into a job in my opinion. The free TP is nice, but you will probably want to buy at least some TP eventually.

This is correct, and a subscription has other benefits including 500 TP a month, swift travel, rest XP, 2 extra character slots, unlimited chat/mail/auction house, player vs. monster player access, etc. The cheapest subscription is to buy a whole year for $100, but they also have 3 month and 1 month pricing tiers. The main drawback to a subscription (other than the cost of course) is that you don't ever earn permanent access to the zones. If you ever drop your subscription, you would still have to purchase the zones like anyone else, no matter how long you were a subscriber.

Very true. However, since you get 500tp "free" every month, as long as you don't spend it all on more frivolous things like horses and clothes, you can probably buy several quests packs using those when your sub ends.
