The Lord of the Rings Online™

Won't Launch From Steam
LOTRO will not launch from my steam library. When I click "play" my profile changes to say I'm in game, and other downloads are suspended. However, LOTRO does not launch, and after a few seconds, downloads resume and I'm no longer in-game.

I validated the files, which redownloaded them. But this didn't fix anything, and afterwards I had the same problem.

Any idea what is going on?

This is a problem with Steam...

Navigate to the game itself -- program files/steam/StemApps/common/Lord of the RIngs Online/

and launch it from there.

sorry, but which one of the .exe files in the installation directory should I run when encountering similair issue? Actually trying to run genuine LOTRO client in order to make sure all dependencies are correctly installed on the machine.

You must start with the Launcher. With the PC Client (It is different for the Mac Client) I believe the name is: TurbineLauncher.exe

Thanks for answers. Managed to run it properly from Steam client after letting genuine lotro client to install all dependencies and start patching. Now testing expansions. Earlier couldn't run turbinelauncher because some DLL lib was missing, luckily game runs smooth now.

I'm having a problem with this. And I just got this game downloaded!

@PyroPikmin500: If your problem is same as mine was ( Play button in steam doesn't work, or works only for a short time[starts downloads again, doesn't launch the game]) and manually running TurbineLauncher returns missing DLL error (or bad application type) you can do one of the following:
1) Navigate to *install_directory/3rdparty and install all dependencies manually (provided they're downloaded correctly;
or even easier, but longer as you'll download some of the game files again, you'll need more hdd space in order to do this..
2) Download official installer from lotro(dot)com and install it to different path, let it install dependencies and stop when launcher is already running and updating game data- you should now be able to run steam version too.
(from my experience) option 1) didn't work for me as some of dependencies were downloaded incorrectly (or in wrong release version), so I decided to go with option 2) (more time, bandwidth and disk space (temporaly) consuming; and it worked for me the best.

Here's what worked for me:
1. Open steam, right click Lotro (on left), select properties
2. Local Files > Browse Local Files

-- Perform the following steps on each executable file --
Executable Files: "lotroclient.exe", "turbineclientlauncher.exe", "TurbineInvoker.exe", "TurbineLauncher.exe"
For each file:
1. Right click > Properties -> Compatibility
2. Check to run as administrator
3. (Maybe optional?) Check to run in compatibility mode with Windows 7

I've had this problem every time I've reinstalled the game through Steam on a new computer/reset computer. It's always fixed very easily by installing DirectX:

1. In the LOTRO launcher, click the drop-down arrow.
2. Click "Options".
3. Select the "Repair" tab.
4. Click the button "Install" next to "Install Direct X (Windows Only)
5. Follow the prompts to install.
i cant get the game to finish downloading it seems on steam or from the website itself..i dont know much about computers so i dont know what the issue is :/

I know this is a very old thread, but I had this exact problem and I want to save others from the same. Ultimately, I had to go directly to:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=5555

and had to download and install that.

Doesn't fix the graying out per-se, but fixed the game itself.

The link is broken now, could you share what was its target?

MSVCR100.dll is the dll file that is missing when I try to run the launcher as admin. Im sure you can download the .dll itself from microsoft or somewhere safe to fix this.
