But basing off what the developer has done in the recent past, I think it's going to be full action paced gamepad button masher MMO rather than a story telling MMO-RPG. If not, like a Diablo-esque MMO.
But who knows? Maybe they'll end up doing something similar to what SWTOR does but in the LotR universe.
I personally think that the New World game was supposed to be their Lord of the Rings MMO but they didn't get the required license.
Between early 2021 and early 2023, I was of the mind that LOTRO was an OK MMORPG, the last bastion to experience Middle Earth, I bought the game, all the expansions and VIP, but now I won't touch that POS game anymore. It just isn't worth it anymore, the developers are making a mockery out of their players.
But recently, I was given a reality check and found out that LOTRO and SSG don't care about their players, they only care about money and their public image, they will turn the game into a circus full of clowns if it makes them more money before they fix anything, like performance, lag, or their horrible launcher.
The new game will somehow manage to be bigger trash than LOTRO, which isn't hard to achieve these days. For that I agree with you - it will have its own custom universe, vaguely inspired by Middle Earth and it will be the same cringe letdown as New World. If AGS can't fix their magnum opus MMORPG, where they have complete creative freedom, for so long and keep bleeding players, then there is no hope for them to create something better.
The only hope would be a time machine - develop the game in the 2003-2006 range and send it in 2023. That's the only way to have a game that's not complete woke trash with vapid world, substance and story.
I don't want the meat of it and i don't want it raw.
You basically need a full time lawyer talking to the copyright lawyers handling things, which the big companies will have by default, will be about an extra $100,000/year just in lawyer fees so they don't get sued or have the license revoked.
Passion projects are gatekept from even trying. I think it's around 2050 when it's finally public domain, maybe a little sooner. When that happens there's guaranteed to be a million new LOTR projects everywhere.
Or in a moment of optimism, it will have dozens of skills, a complex levelling system, quests full of variety, landscapes that will kill you if not levelled properly and will stick to some vision of the source material that is coherent.
Sadly it'll more than likely be the former
