TOTALLY worth it. If you love LotR, you'll love this. SO much lore in the game from LoTR, Hobbit, etc. You can see and experience it ingame as you make your *own* adventure!
There's 10+ years of expansions and updates. That's a lot. Perhaps even too much, unless you have a lot of time to dedicate to the game, or are willing to skip content. I find myself ignoring some quests or activities because I just want to move on with the main story. However there's nothing stopping you from going back and completing what you missed.
Some of the content I ignore, though, is an artifact of the game being free to play and receiving constant updates. There is content that is just pointless now, since it was aimed at the old level caps. If you recognize this content and just skip it, it's not an issue.
With that said, extremely few MMOs have given me the sense of discovery and exploration that LOTRO does.
Most important thing is that it's about the journey, not rushing to the endgame. If you just want to smash headfirst into the endgame then you are better off playing a different MMO. For that type of player Lotro is not good value for money or time.
