assuming you are on windows, perhaps check windows event viewer and also windows reliability history. might be a game crash event or system related errors.

some logs in folder
c:\users\YourWindowsLogin\appdata\local\temp\the lord of the rings online
might also have an error msg

first time playing? new computer? probably missing dx9 and dx11. (windows 11 comes with dx12 and NO old libraries).

many other things to check here:

- All who install LotRO for the first time on a new Windows 10 or 11 PC, need to install 3 pre-req things (ALL MUST BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE OFFICIAL MICROSOFT WEB-SITE www.microsoft.com):

1. DirectX 11 = > https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/179113/how-to-install-the-latest-version-of-directx

2. Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update ( vcredist_x86.exe ) and ( vcredist_x64.exe ) = > Google for " Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package " and pick Download choice from Microsoft.

3. Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update ( vcredist_x86.exe ) and ( vcredist_x64.exe) = > Google for " Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package " and pick Download choice from Microsoft.

- If your game client not running on Windows 10 or 11, try this: Right click the LOTRO game link in your Steam game list, pick Manage from list, then pick Browse Local Files, this brings up the Window explorer for LOTRO. Look in the LOTRO directory for the 3rdParty folder, look inside that folder and run all the .exes you find there while the game launcher Not running and under Admin rights account.

- Make sure your Firewall and active defending anti-malware programs have LOTRO directory or game exes in exceptions.

- Make sure you are running the game as Administrator or an account with administrator rights.

- Use the troubleshooting compatibility options in Windows 10 or 11 OS.

- Many problems with the game stem from poor or faulty Network connection between your computer and the game servers near Boston, MA, USA.

thanks I'll check those links. I've been playing LOTRO since it came out. I even bought a lifetime sub. This behavior is new. It started a few days ago. Evenually it goes to character and loads. Just have to keep rebooting it and waiting about 10 secs before loading a character. Thx again

maybe a setting in your userpreferences.ini file is corrupt
go to folder Documents\The Lord of the Rings Online
then delete or rename or move somewhere else that file
try the game again.

I'm also a long time player coming back to play for a few weeks. Just recently i was getting a lot of CTD's. Usually when i was walking around Bree or if i wanted to switch to a different character. Sometimes it would CTD when i was out in the open world too but that was pretty rare.

I read something about switching the launcher to 64 bit and since i've done that i've had no CTD's the last two days. When the game launcher comes up at the top right of the window you will see EN button, a down arrow button, minimize button and close window button. Click the down arrow/caret button. Then click Options and then at the popup window click the general tab. Select 64 bit client if it isn't already selected.

It's already 64bit, so maybe I'm just "rushing" it too fast. Thanks for the tip.

I started playing right when it came out. My two sons and I loved it so much, I bought lifetime subscriptions for all of us. We sure got our moneys worth!!
