Default download and install folder?
The game seems to be another one of them that just starts downloading without asking questions. Checked the obvious places. Where is this install and under what folder name?

If you installed it via Steam, it will be located in your Steam folder (something like 'C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\lord of the rings online\')

The package you downloaded from Steam is quite old, so it needs to download & install a huge amount of updates before you can play. As there is no question to ask, it will just do it the first time you start it and it finds that it's outdated.

Please be aware that you should never use the Steam verify function on Lord of the Rings Online, as the verify will find that there are a lot of file differences, and it will download the old version again for you to 'correct' this.

Thanks. I'm finding more and more MMORPGs, especially F2Ps, like downloading the launcher in the Steam area then they start to download and install the rest of the game where ever it pleases (see: on my rather small SSD C: drive). It's become a concern lately.

Most if not all MMOs work that way. There are always updates to the base install, and Steam only provides the base install, not an update platform, so the launcher does the rest outside of Steam.
You can change the install path of a game in Steam when you are about to install it. That is your chance to move it away from your SSD, as the installer triggered updates will update there as well.

Generally speaking "ALL" Steam games download anything THEY (i.e. Steam) download under the above mentioned location. Once a game is running, all of the game's support files wind up in various locations depending upon the game -- although they are "usually" in "documents"

In the case of LOTRO, the files (for a PC) should all wind up in "(MY)Documents\The Lord of the Rings On Line" -- that is where "screenshots" wind up or where you stick the "Plugins" folder for Lua Plugins. For specifices on the Mac Client see:
