My rule of thumb on creating characters on a server is going with Tinker 1st. I find that being able to make 7 pieces of needed equipment per character (2) ear (1) neck (2) wrist and (2) finger via Jeweller a great pick. I also find that the quest rewards tend to favor armor and weapons much better accross all classes than jewellery.
Though there is nothing wrong with being able to make your own weapons and/or armor.
Making your own weapons might be useful as well, although when you join a kinship, you can probably get a kinmate to forge some for you.
