Its a mmorpg true but for combat you actually can map a lot of it. Best bet is copy paste the layout for like ffxiv.
Nope he is pretty on the mark.
Depending on your Class you go beyond what you could map to a single Joypad.
Some less skill overloaded classes like Wardens would work fine with the limited skills.
Yet other Classes you would limit yourself to just a subset of powers.
Have fun playing the game still remember you don't enjoy it in all it's Glory.
But that you at a certain point in your Charachter progression just outgrow the possible amount of Button Combinations to map all necessary Skills to your Joypad resulting in a underperforming and degraded playing experience.
As i mention above there is one single Class the Warden that because of it's unique Gameplay would work best with a joypad but still you would endup with way to many skills to map all of those to a Joypad.
If you don't care about performing at your peak then go ahead and play with a joypad it certainly does work from a technical perspective.
Whether they enjoy playing it that way is totally up to them.
I know I wouldn't enjoy it that way, although I can see the merit of using a controller combined with a Steam link unit to play on the big TV downstairs.
LotRO doesn't require twitch-play, so you can think about the strange chords you'll have to set up to map everything you need.
The biggest drawback is the lack of a keyboard to chat. (I hate voice chat)
