Have you checked you system's sound controls -- are they muted.
Do you have the Audio levels up in the game Opions.
Just proves that strangers on the internet are not usually reliable sources of information.

Fonzie, check out the official forum, technical support subforum. There are scores of multi-page posts regarding sound issues. Also, if you are using an SB X-Fi, you are pretty much out of luck unless you downgrade your driver--which, in turn, will bring back the BSODs.
If you post your solution, then people might learn from your experience :-)
This. It's a common problem with Lotro, where the game will report "none" under Playback Devices. You don't have to delete/rename the preferences file; most of the time, restarting the game will fix it.
You can tell if sound is working or not by the audio on the character select screen, so no need to log all the way in. You can also check the audio settings from here, to chose the correct soundcard if the system isn't reporting "none."
Good thing you resurrected this post, otherwise the OP would STILL be without sound after 4 years
like music or the caracter doesn't. Just brilliant -.-
You know how people use google, right?
Badly, apparently.
This worked for me!
SITUATION: have been playing LOTRO for a few years on Macbook Pro 2013 (OS X 10.14 Mojave) through WINE port. Sound was OK on internal laptop speakers AND Bluetooth speakers. Problem started when I moved to Bluetooth earbuds - they were connected, I could hear the system sounds perfectly, but upon opening LOTRO all audio output became chippy, stuttery, very low quality (like an old vinyl recording).
WHAT I'VE TRIED: changing Mac OS system-wide audio output+input -> didn't work. Changing in-LOTRO audio input-output -> either didn't work or caused crash to desktop.
After spending more than 3 hours on 2 different days, I tried the mentioned above solution by Alleix.
SOLUTION: quote: "go into username_my documents_the lord of the rings online. And change the name of the file: UserPreferences." Worked perfectly for me from the 1st time, and my original UserPreferences file is saved with a different name. Now I just need to re-set all my LOTRO settings and options. Thank you for the solution!!!!
It happened to me the other day there was no sound what fixed it was shut down game and reboot system may not work for this person but that’s what happened so me so just because you “never heard of it “ doesn’t mean it’s not happening
