Playerbase?
Title says it all, i know the game is old and not all players play on steam. Just curious.

The numbers aren't public, so no one can really answer this. In a Dec 2020 shareholder meeting, they claimed there were a little over 100k monthly average users. But that was during lockdowns, so it's almost certainly no longer that high.

The servers typically have ~500 people online and visible on average during peak hours. Some servers are more active, others are less active.

A key thing is Steam with LOTRO since 2012 has given a majority issues with running the Game. Most of LOTRO's Playerbase uses the Standalone Client.

It's impossible to say "how many Players are playing" at any given time but this MMORPG does keep a "Healthy Population".

One key thing is Updates and whenever New Content: Landscape, Instances, Raids, etc. come out is when things are more lively. Also the usual Festival will see more Players too.

Evernight & Arkenstone still keep the 1st & 2nd best Daily Populations for LOTRO at their peaks and the Angmar + Mordor Legendary Servers are also seeing a lot of activity.

We have the Fall 2024 Expansion coming too so in Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec we'll see numbers start to rise again.

Steam numbers are never accurate because people also play from the stand alone client itself and then the player base is also split up between tons of servers themselves which you can get a small idea of the number of people on a server at any given time on the social panel however there are tons of people that choose to show invisible so they will not show up on the total number of online players when searching on the social panel itself.

I wish they did 1 mega server and just had different gateways like many games do so that way things are condensed into 1 but given their lag issues i doubt it will ever happen.

That being said there are plenty of people online to play with especially right now in the legendary servers.

Not just that. A lot install on Steam but launch the game from the .exe in the game folder so that it doesn't launch through Steam. Mainly because if you launch through Steam you have to use the external store which is really annoying.

I'm one of them.

Due to how LOTRO is setup we're unlikely to ever see 1 "Mega Server".

Oh the lag would be glorious

I can only speak for the server I'm on (Landroval), but it usually runs from 300-600 when I play. Right now on Mordor and Angmar, it's 1k+ most times, but those are new and VIP only.

Just so you know, the internal store now works with the steam version again, and you can pay for things using your steam wallet. Its been fixed for close to a year at this point.

Oh really? I launched it through Steam when I last upgraded my PC and did a fresh install. It was still opening a external browser. Pretty sure that was less than a year ago. I'll give it a try right now.

Edit: Yep, you are correct.

Interest has shifted from all Servers to the 2 New Legendary Servers.

But this won't last forever as eventually the Fall Expansion will bring many back to the Main Servers.
