The Lord of the Rings Online™

Can’t decide between Captain and Lore-Master
So I’m torn between these two in terms of overall gameplay and effectiveness in group content and PvE solo landscape.

Which offers the best group support and is easy to play without having to micromanage as often? Is one class better than the other at ability rotations and damage? I usually go tank or DPS in most MMOs so I don’t know how often I would end up as support in groups (unless it’s kinda forced?)

I like the 2H vibes of cappy but I also like the crowd and sword usage as a mage too.

Well I have played Captain as primary tank for a long time lvl 135. Never had any problems in standard groups. I have never tried to tank for the larger raid groups so i cant speak to that. Your buffs for self and group are great and you have added utility with your follower. As long as you have your consumables handy you will be in good shape. I do play the LM but only sol for fun Lvl 125. I like the playstyle there as well.and you can go full out mage style vs pet vs support. Depends on what you like best. That is why i play both.

Does LM typically only get picked as support for any group content, or is it more like a versatile dps too?

both classes are supportive. the captain is more like giving buffs to the group with healing and you can tank a bit with the captain. the lore-master is giving debuffs to the enemies and can really good crowd control the enemies and can also heal a little bit. when it comes to damage the lore master is really strong and for the solo play the lore masater is much easier to play with. but normally none of this 2 classes are choosed to make dmg in a group playl. and if than it would be the lore master because lore master can make much more damage tha the captain

Thanks. Also what’s the fastest way to lvl from 140-150?

Missions, or spamming thievery and mischief skirmish solo, bypass all the checkpoints that you can and get to the end flag as fast as possible

When you do missions and get the end reward box choice go with the character stuff, it gives you an xp boost in there as well

Lotro is different than any other mmo. I know i a lot of mmos claim this but this is especially true with lotro.
If you want to rush to the endgame, do not bother with this game.
Lotro is more focused on the journey than max level experience.

LM is a debuffer. It is mostly effective either on the debuffer tree (yellow) or direct damage (red)/focused on pet damage (blue).
As a captain you can fulfill three roles damage, tank and healer. Captain is the only class that can use Halberds.
LM is a semi range class and Captain is melee class only.
Captain is reactive class aka some skill are only avaiable to use when you are in a proper state. You cannot use skill anytime you want, you have activate a skill that gives you a proper state to be able to use more powerful skill etc. This is how captain works, a quick description. There is more to the captain than this but this is a quick summary.
A lot of lore masters skills have casting time. The question is do you enjoy playing with pets. If you want to play a caster, there is the rune keeper. class

Also if you plan to play captain, do not forget to add these lines to your skins:

<Element ID="Gameplay_AutoSkillBar" X="1" Y="1" Width="1" Height="1"></Element>

In that case, i recommend going sword and board style despite two handed doing more fun. For me, at least, sword and shield is more fun.

Haha just came to this thread to recommend Captain … but you’ve already chosen!

For what it’s worth, I’ve played Captain for 7 years as my main and find it suits me really well. I tanked raids back at level 120 cap pretty successfully and at the time it was the most commonly seen tank class in groups. There will always be a place for him in the raid, either as tank or buffer. Couldn’t really get into LM, it felt too slow.

Guardian is a fun class too. It went through a weak spot at one point but I think it’s been buffed a bit and it’s better these days.

When i play captain, it reminds me of playing a paladin.

They dropped the crit defence from Bolster by about 40% in a recent patch but it's still a fun class
