Quote from the offical LOTRO Forum:

"Turbine made changes to the file checker for Lotro. When you start the launcher it does a new check for damaged or missing files. If the launcher finds this situation is true for your installation, it will invoke the Akamai software to download replacements. If you do not have the Turbine specific version of Akamai installed you get prompted to allow the installation of Akamai. Once the Akamai software is installed it will download the necessary files."

It is some kind of download manager which Turbine is using.

The Akamai application is used to download the required files from a server local to where you are. It is (should be) required only for a fresh install or when data files are deleted/corrupt.

You can try and download the client from here: https://client.akamai.com/conf/install.html

According to Turbine, you can delete the installation of Akamai after you're done installing Lotro.

ok thank you guys!
Like all gaming companies, Turbine, does not maintain its own distribution network, it contracts with those who have them. All of these services charge the gaming companies to use these networks.

Valve (Steam) is one such distribution scheme -- and a very poor one at that. At one time, Turbine tried to do things "cheap" by using PANDO and the PMB Pando Media Booster. For many reasons, trying to use this "torrent style" dowload mechanism proved to be a disaster in everyone's eyes except the bean counters. Turbine only stopped using it when the Pando network was infected with a major sercurity problem. Shortly after that, PANDO was sold.

Akamai has been offering "distributed download" services, virtually since the beginning of the Internet. The "Akamai Netsession" client is probably the best option available today.

Unlike PMB once your download is completed, the Netsession client stops doing anything.

The alternative download mechanism is "Happy Cloud" -- or "play instantly."

{LINK ÎNLĂTURAT} is NOT a download service, but rather a system, like the Steam Overlay, which integrates chat, statistics and the like for all Blizzard games.)
