The main story has times where you're following on the heels of the fellowship or ahead of them, but you're basically a supporting character helping them behind the scenes.

The story of the one ring in LotRO was finished with the release of Mordor in 2017 and continues with stories of it's own like the Black Book of Mordor that also covers the great alliance in the second age, the Legacy of Durin and the Song of Wind and Waves that will take us to Umbar in two weeks.

I haven't done all the raids but I dont think you can fight sauron in any.
You can fight shelob though.

But the story continues after saurons defeat with original content. With you exploring the remains of mordor and minas morgul, and other regions not in the trilogy.

LOTRO comes from the Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and the Appendices for where the Game is built off of. It is a "Between the Pages" Video Game where it is heavily built on the Lore but puts things in to fill out the many spots Tolkien didn't go into for every Region of Middle-earth.

Due to not owning the Rights to the Silmarillion, there are various changes whenever anything from the Second Age, First Age and before that are mentioned.

An example: Sauron's guise to deceive the Elves is known as Annatar in the Lore but for LOTRO it is Antheron "Master of Gifts". T he reason being is that the story of the Rings of Power are covered in the Silmarrilion not the Hobbit, LOTRs or Appendices.

There are other Changes as well but overall LOTRO sticks very close to the Lore in it's "LOTRO-version" while adding in various Non-Canon Elements, usually being prevented in a Tolkien-like style as possible.

so basically this is an mmo with a clear ending (defeat of sauron)? you just have an option to continue further?

Pretty much. The 'original' game concept was to make it to Mordor and destroy the ring and if that's where you want to end your game play you can. Or you can continue on as the books don't end at that point, but continue on.
