Playing this game for 12-ish years already, not because I like MMO (I quite frankly dislike this genre), but simply because I love LOTR.

Try it out, give it a chance.

It does. You can take part in some of the events directly (in all of the major events, pretty much). But your character is not a part of the fellowship of the ring, and you have other pressing matters in Middle-Earth to attend to.
Main storyline (along with what happens in the book) features new plots, that were not stated by Tolkien, but they are very well incorporated into the bookish narrative. Pretty much anyone would tell you that the game is respectful of the source material.

I try to be careful in answering in order not to spoil stuff.

Oh you will. You'll meet all of them and you'll see all those places where books take place (both LOTR and Hobbit)

There's also a thing called session play, where basically the NPC is telling you a story and you 'pop into' the body of the 'historical' character and play out the story. Sucks from a game play aspect, but it's a good way to get the 'ancient history' of the story into the game.

Seeing all the places mentioned from the trilogy 100%. Meeting the characters from the trilogy 100%. Doing whats in the books, not so much except for the BIG stuff.

While the Fellowship is doing it's thing, you're basically a diversion / bad guy magnet / following along.

Since SSG has bought and running the game, no its not.

Good thread. Agree, if a basic to more knowledgeable Tolkien fan plays, they will know where they are in the world. The game takes some of the more skeletal locations in the lore\canon and uses that as a starting point to flesh out the regional caves, dungeons, or that is how I see it after a doz hours maybe.

Coming at LOTRO from various games: Morrowind to Dark Souls, and do like old games (Ark Fatalis, Dark Messiah), but not into MMO's. Put a little time in LOTRO and have Dwarf lvl 10 champion, with just a few hours coop with a LOTRO vet friend, so had some help adjusting to the mechanics.

But must say, damn not enjoying combat. What am I missing? Made lvl 10 without dying so must be doing something correct? I'll watch some vids\guides but insights welcome.

The old joke was combat was so boring and slow you could actually read a book and not handicap yourself while fighting.

I approach combat like I'm playing a piano, just a slow, stately rhythm.

Underneath the lore; which is what keeps most of us here, is a standard mmo with an unexciting combat system. You're probably not missing a thing.

I think there is not and there will not be a better game that is so close to the lore than Lotro. You don´t believe? make your own experience and show us a better game than this.

So, in the game the events from the Lotr starting with the FOTR are taking place in real time along side your character as you're pulled into the events of the fellowship of the ring by chance, but not an active participant in the fellowship, you do encounter and interact with characters, villains, boss fights and locations and settings from the book, the game is massive.

Each race has their own starting area, and prologue instance, it's like a tutorial, the Elves and the Dwarves start in Ered Luin, and I think it's the best lore wise. If you're a Shire fan, the def play a Hobbit.

The issues are that a lot of the areas overlap level wise, most people who play for the Tolkien goodness grab a tortoise stone and disable leveling exp.

If you like Arnor lore, head the North Downs after questing a bit in the Lone Lands, the Main Quest will take you on a set path, but you can branch off
