Did they give a reason?
1 - Unless it takes place during the events of the War of the Ring, the only people who would play the new MMO would be the fanatical Silmarillion lore-masters.
2 - If LotrO does go down, it won't be because of a competitor, but because of mismanagement from within, over-reliance on loot boxes, etc.
I play "Lord of the Rings: Online" because I get to run around in Middle Earth during the events of the books which fascinated me.
- I get to smoke pipeweed on the doorstep of Bag End and fight madly for the survival of Rohan on the walls of the Hornburg.
- I get to look up at the ruined crown of Weathertop and down on the ruins of Barad-dûr
- I get to walk from the frosty bastions in Angmar all the way to the forests of Ithilien to look through the palisades at the hotlands of Harad.
I like Tolkien's writings, I like his world and all the lore that comes with it.
I don't care about what hobbits were doing 2,500 years prior to the founding of the Shire, though, and I really don't want a fetch-quest from Thingol.
One thing I really enjoy in LOTRO is the amount of things you can do and the huge number of middle-earth zones you can explore.
There is no chance that this new MMO will have this amount of content.
