My take on it was if you download via Steam you're not getting the 100% up to date version and once you've launched the game will be looking at another long download while the game patches it's self up to the current version.

Also there's been a problem with the Steam downloads of DDO & LotRO for a while now in that they won't work and the only solution is to delete the Steam version and download direct from the company.

The version from the LotRO site won't be up to date either, but it's still a lot newer than the version from Steam.

Most (if not all) problems with the Steam version come from missing (or failing to install) support libraries, C++ redistributables, DirectX bits.

The only thing different between Steam and non-Steam is the Steam overlay, and the possibility to use funds from your Steam wallet to purchase things like a subscription. If you start the launcher directly (by going to the folder where it's installed), the game will be exactly the same as the stand alone install (so without Steam overlay and wallet support)

Can't speak for everyone but it works fine for me.

The only thing that can happen by downloading from Steam is having to spend more time still updating after. While the official site would be less than Steam, but still some updates nonetheless.

>.> you're literally going to be patching after either download of the launcher. That is why the files are so small for either of them. Are people really this stu- actually yes they are. Hell there's still people that don't know alt+enter enters and exits fullscreen on games.

I have downloaded it from Steam many times and it does not give me problems.

Everyone who doesn't know as much as you is stupid. It's why you're an expert on every subject and have such an awesome life. Obviously.
Game doesn't even launch for me after finishing. =/

Same I finally updated it after being a away for a bit, and it won't even launch when I press launch =( I feel like I always have problems with this game via Steam.

What worked for me was to install it directly from tha game´s website to somewhere else on the computer, then I copied all of the files in the main folder there and pasted it to the Steam folder, where the installation of LOTRO is supposed to be. When I was asked what files I wanted to keep I choose to overwrite existing files. So the game is where Steam is looking for it by launching the game and so far I´ve had no difficulties to launch or update the game.

I’m not sure this sufficiently serves as the sole measure of one’s intellectual capacity, but I didn’t know this - thank you for the tip :p
Can confirm this, wanted to try this game again after a couple of years. Steam install fails every time.
