This has been discussed a million times already. The "official" explanation is that if he ran on foot, it would be unfair to the others and he would end up racing all by himself. Sonic, in these games, is running just for the lulz, and not to show skills.

Besides, Sonic's racing games have had him using a car (or an air board, in Riders) since Sonic Drift in 1994 - the only exception being Sonic R. So there's really no reason for a big gasp now.

The behind-the-scenes explanation is that they initially tried to make Sonic characters run on foot, but it handled too differently from the car racers.

Its a Kart Racer, thats why. Don't know how he would compete fairly, or fly without some sort of vehicle aid.

1) Sonic driving a car.
2) Humans that aren't Eggman.
3) Combat segments, read: anything that isn't about going fast.
4) Hedgehogs using traditional firearms.
5) Scavenger hunts (see also: 3).

As you can see, Sega just can't get it right... but, that doesn't change the truth.

I thought this argument was thrown into the garbage after the first game was discovered to be, you know, good? We stopped lamenting on how bad Sonic Drift was and said "why is Sonic in a kart? WHO CARES, I'M HAVING FUN!".

The -REAL- question is. Why is Eggman in a car? He's the fastest character in the entire series. Bar none.

I spoke to Sonic last week on the phone, he is doing well and holidaying in maine. He told me he has been struggling with Arthritis for the last seven years. Doctors have suggested knee replacement surgery. Mario, now he is another old bloke.

Sonic can't swim nor can he fly.

Transforming cars rectifies this problem. So it's cool.

Why does Metal Sonic need a car? He can fly and he's probably waterproof.
