Problems Unlocking NiGHTS

For some reason, I am having huge problems in the sprint race that is the level right before unlocking NiGHTS. I've tried high speed and a main trait, accelleration, and handling as a main trait. Nothing is working. (Using Shogun & Sonic so far). There's a part in the level where I"m forced into taking the boat, but Nights just flies over me and gains enough of a lead that I can't seem to catch up. Is there another character I should be using or a shortcut that I am missing?

Doesn't it just let you pass tracks if you fail them so many times anyway?

Maybe that's just easy mode?
I'll tell you right off that I'm rubbish at this game yet don't remember struggling to unlock anything early on.

Sorry I didn't list the name of the track. It was Carrier Crisis in the Scorching Skies area. Shredster VII was right. I was missing the jump. Sonic needs to flip to hit it and I was going too low and missing that transformation entirely. Thanks for the help! Also thanks Prime Sonic, I will check out those videos too.
