Rolling when flying is faster (Video proof)
Hello boys and girls.

Did you know that you can fly at a faster speed if you repeatedly keep rolling when flying? Some might be aware of this while some might not. Maybe some of you watched my guide? I made a video just to show some proof about this discovery. Please, if you got the time, watch it. The first half of the video is me not rolling and the other half is when I'm rolling.

Lets hear it for physics everyone.

So, is everyone going to be rolling the entire time while flying now? If so, that would be pretty silly to watch.

If you mean silly as in hilarious, then yes.

What a ridiculous mechanic, better get ready for barrel roll racing.

I just tried doing this. It does give a speed boost, but it also makes it a lot harder to control; I ended up falling far behind my own personal best when trying to do it. Also, if you spam it too quickly it fails and slows you down. So it isn't quite an "i win" button.

So, if it's an unintended exploit it should be fixed, but I don't expect a lot of people abusing it in regular matchmaking. It might screw up time trials though.

I am quite used to rolling now so I can keep doing it without failing too much. It does happen sometimes though when the game doesn't want to register my rolls correctly, so I fly down/up instead. Practise makes perfect.

Sumo mentioned wanting to add VAC support, so presumably there will be another patch at some point. If they think it's an unintended exploit, that would be a good time to fix it, since time trials are suspect right now anyway.

However, there's a chance they won't want to alter the mechanic, so who knows.

The right thing to do would be to report this bug, but that explains why I have seen people roll around over the place.

This game could be huge if Sumo keeps supporting it. I mean DLC and all.

There's also a "risk boost" mechanic, which is intended, and also causes everyone to roll around. That's why even the "expert ghost" from Sumo will do lots of rolls.

You're doing the right thing green giant. I mentioned it as well, but i couldnt prove without having to bother to learn how to do it. Anyway hope they do something about it

Interestingly I told S0L about this yesterday, but he said there is no speed difference.

Interesting, i'll give this a try.

It does work, I beat my best Carrier Zone time by almost two seconds by barrel-roll spamming, but I wouldn't call it the most effective. The top-10 ghost I was against didn't spam rolls itself and there were plenty of cases where I screwed up angles or mashed the roll too quickly. I also missed a lot of boosts because I was dodging away from them.

In an actual race, I can't see this tactic being an effective way to win, getting hit with anything while spamming roll is going to throw you off.

But it's better than Mario Kart DS's "Snaking" boosts; at least you can't do these everywhere, only in the more open flight sections. Try roll-spamming in Adder's Lair, I doubt you'd be able to get anything out of it without substantial practice.

It all depends on how you fly when you do the rolls. I have been hit by a lot of weapons when rolling and it doesn't make me fly out of the map. It also doesn't matter that much if you miss a couple of boosts. Try making rolls and then fly sideways to the destination. That's what I did in this video and it works really good after some practicing.

Doing this with a keyboard might be hard. I use a xbox 360 controller myself.
