• He wants it to be fair.
  
• They originally (with the first game) were going to have him on foot, but eventually decided on karts for various reasons (I think troubles with drifting was one).

Sonic can't fly or swim & his car is so he can actually compete because it isn't a foot race game, it's a vehicle race game!

I watched a track event in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games that featured Sonic. AND HE LOST.

I can believe he might lose a cart race. This is a less strange option, certainly.


Of course the strangest option would be to leave Sonic out of a racing game featuring various Sega characters.

He also can't swim properly, I doubt he'd be able to keep up with Tails or Knuckles in a race over water as a result.

The real question is: Why does Tails need a car? He CAN fly and swim!

Why is Sonic in a car? Well that's obvious, so that he play fair with the other racers. If he wasn't in the car, then he would be the cheapest character in the game, finishing a race without letting any of the other opponents get to through the first lap. In other words, Sonic would be game breaking, like in the previous game where Opa-Opa was the only racer to have 3 All Star moves.
