Black Screen instead of main menu

When I start the game, I get until the intro video with Sonic driving/flying around, but if I try to skip the intro video the video freezes/crashes (repeating the last second of video seen before I pressed skip in an endless loop), when I sit thru the entire intro video I get a black screen where the menu should be. I hear sound and can hear menu sounds when pressing enter, but the screen remains black. Is there any way to manually (re)set the video settings?

The same thing happens to me when playing in my 2560 x 1080 resolution, I only hear the audio after the video

I use a 3440x1440 resolution, so probably ultra-wide screens are the problem (we probably have to set the game to 1920x1080 manually. Maybe if the correct resolution is then offered in the in-game menu it can be gotten to work, but first we need to find out how to manually edit the configuration file to fix the resolution prior to launching the game..

correct in 1920x1080 works well for me and is seen in ultrawide and if you can modify the resolution before entering the game by launching it directly from steam and choosing settings, it brings 11 screen resolution modes.
but the grace would be that it will work for me in the resolution of my monitor no less.

Haven't tried yet myself (as the game is not a priority to me, only bought it as it's one of the very few PC games to offer split screen gameplay so I can play with guests). But according to Google/Steam:
1.) Right-click on the game title under the Library in Steam and select Properties.
2.) Under the General tab click the Set launch options... button.
3.) Write: -screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080. where 1920 and 1080 can be changed as you wish.
4.) click OK, Close and launch game!
