Any tips on Burning Depths S-class?
Close to uninstalling this game because I keep failing even though I'm playing the track nearly flawlessly.

I won't bother mentioning the atrocious, broken, lazy, unexcusable mess of an AI system this game implements on S-class races, there's plenty of threads on it if you google 'Sonic Transformed AI'

I just want some actual helpful tips if anyone has any. Thanks.

I'll give this a shot, thank you.

Agreed. Not only is the track too cramped, but the loose boat controls make it near impossible to do anything.

It worked, thank you! It was really a matter of choosing the highest boost stat all along, huh.

The boat controls are definitely hard to master, I find that drifting helps adjust your trajectory which can often get misaligned by turning without using the drift function, making you go all over the place

It's important to decelerate while drifting on some turns on this map, namely the ones that are nearly 90º degrees, you can still do them fully accelerating, but it's much harder to accomplish

It took me 30+ tries to beat this in S-class and I feel like the AI just felt sorry for me at which point they kind of stopped trying

Also knowing the map well helps you chain massive boosts that seem to be the only way the AI can be beaten.

Use Tails to learn the map. Don't keep your foot down on the accelerater.

I did this with Team Fortress and Console Mod, and it worked out fine for me.

This is fine, but for anyone else just be wary that the Heavies boat form isn't the best form on water. It's a bit notorious for being slightly rubbish on the water. Although Cart/Plane form is good, many players will avoid Team Fortress on any maps that feature water.

Use Tails with handling mod (or speed if mastered) then in the halls quickly switch your drift back and forth (think of it like a snake) to get boost 3 and let it go right at the end of the turn at the end of the tunnel. Dont flip on the waterfall boat part lap 2. Always remember to lead turns early with the boat. When getting on lad give it 1 sec then mid transformation begin drift. idk why im answering this I guess I just feel like it.

slow down to make tight turns.

someone post the video demonstrating the drift directional tapping thing that lets you maintain wider drifts

it entirely changes your racing line options

Ok.

Keep in mind, when you first beat the game and you think you've learned everything there is to learn, you haven't. There's a bunch of cool tech (besides just held drifting) in this game that if learned and practiced, can vastly improve you skills.
It's super rewarding to master.

Does anyone know WHY that works?

I've got a couple ideas but idk. It seems unintentional while happening to be the most useful and impactful thing to going fast, alongside understanding how boosts stack and don't stack

Something to do with the physics I guess. Tapping the stick against the drift probably resets the momentum somewhat each time. I wouldn't be surprised if it were possible to drift while going completely straight if someone managed to reset the momentum perfectly every tap at the exact time you would need to press it during the turning animation.

it would be testable with macros on keyboard buttons for perfect interval inputs, and it would be nice to see how tapping speed affects the curve, because I definitely adjust the speed, but I don't really know what my fingers are doing.

Tapping speed decreases speed. Slower you are, tighter the turns. So essentially by going slower you're going faster around corners. This is useful in any racing game and racing in general, not just here. However, decreasing speed by a lot means it's harder when you're back out in open to keep up. Which is why you tap it in order to keep speed up and the curve as tight as possible while you're going around corners, and keep the pedal down while you're on the straight.

This is useful to know anywhere in the game, but is essential on boat maps because you can retain high boost speed by pushing out any sort of boost as long as you're still effected by the last. (I.E. You have a level 3 boost that you used, you're still on it while you're going on the turn, the level 3 is about to end but you just used a level one drift boost, keeping the level 3 going for as long as the level 1 now lasts. You keep pushing out level 1 drift or stunt boosts, etc, which in boat mode are last longer then the drift takes to charge so you keep it going...)
