The game was designed around a control pad layout, wheel support is not featured. It may be possible to get your wheel working with the game, but the experience would be subpar, compared to playing with a control pad.
XBOX controllers are the most supported controller by Steam based games, straight out of the box. I recommend XBOX 360 controllers, as the newer XBOX One controllers still have some driver issues with some games on PC, especially if you have other controllers plugged in.

Wired Xbox360 controllers can be used on your PC simply by plugging them in. Wireless controllers can be used on your PC if you buy a Wireless Gaming Receiver."
