Is this done on purpose or did they make the wrong model of Maria? I find it funny but at the same time ugly that she has such a giant head.

It's just the size/shape of her hairdo and jacket coupled with the specific perspective and angle depicted there. You can see it doesn't look that exaggerated in other instances such as here:
