The game has been experiencing a steady decrease in concurrent players for many years now and several game issues remain unfixed/untended to. It's hard to say how long the game will still go since there are also non-steam players and whales who buy every new DLC ever, but I doubt that will keep the game going infinitely.

didnt knew game was dead , perhaps it is because you are a big newbie playing in low league without a lot of NEW players to play with you

a lot of people come and go out of star conflict because it is not noob-friendly and newcomers hardly can endure getting facerolled by experienced pilots

If only all these poeple asking if games are dead would just check Steamcharts ... this game still has an average of about 250 players logged in and as far as I know you can log in from platforms other than Steam as well. So, no, it's not dead. I just started playing and I had no problems starting missions, waiting time less than a minute.

if only all these poeple supporting a dead game knew what peak and average means

especially for you I will give you a lecture from the 2nd grade of primary school so listen carefully because repetitions are paid

peak - the highest number of players at a given moment it can be just for 10min you log in make 2 missions in os and close the game, a lot of people do this when they come home from work and that's why the peak is so high; is always higher than average and means essentially nothing
average - the total number of all individual accounts logged in in each hour of the day divided by the number of hours in the day (or week, month, etc.)

so what does it mean?
if there's only 125 players on average (and additionally the trend has been negative for at least several years) this means that if you don't enter the game at a specific time you will play with at most 125 players and this number is constantly decreasing
in addition divide this number by the number of modes and the fact that not everyone plays anything at all but just sits in the menu and you will get the result why there are so many bots in this dead game

btw many people believe that a game with only one mode and an average number of players of 500 or even one or several thousand is dead

I start this game up like once a year. Today I played like 10 matches at rank 7. Matchmaking is totally fine for a 10 year old game, takes like 5 minutes and I get to play against ppl of around my rank.
It would be a lot of fun, if just the games weren't that short. And yes I'm not joining mid-battle. Last game was 2 minutes 2 seconds. Makes me want to straight up uninstall, it's so frustrating.
