what annoys you about the Frackin' universe mod?
seriously. i like the mod. but some things it does to change the BASE game is pretty lame.
a single mod should NEVER do too much at once in my opinion.

if a mod adds many features DON'T change base gameplay elements.

don't add your own little balance patches in the mix when it doesnt need it.

for example the reload mechanic.
I hate it. its annoying and completely unneeded.

at least make some of the gameplay changes OPTIONAL.

i suggest someone make individual patch mods for this kinda thing. i have no idea how to do any of it though.

I have multiple saves of FU, my very first save, I got infected with Madness. Basically a form of currency that is used for the metaphysics branch. However, when it goes over 100 madness, it has negative effects. For example, it removes clothing, randomizes your hunger at times, and only worses the more madness you get.
This wouldn't be bad, if you could remove the madness, which you couldn't. As soon as you visited an Atropus planet, you were doomed. I like to personalize my characters, so when my Glitch character just takes his clothes off for no reason is completely out of character and I can't do anything about it.

Now, keep in mind this was in the past . I have a new FU save, and they seemed to have fixed that. Now you can make your own Quietus without visiting an Atropus planet. Albeit, I have not reached that point in my save. So all of the previous problems I mentioned could be fixed.

Too much grinding

now on the madness thing they have that brain scan healer that lowers madness in science outpost and stuff.

The Research tree being mandatory. It never used to be in the past, but now to do anything it's required. And the amount of research you get before gaining any kind of equipment to grind it is SLOW unless you play consistently without going AFK.

On top of that, Extraction Labs now needing Jolts of electricity. I haven't even gotten any sort of way to charge batteries on my latest save, so they're useless. Good luck getting anything done.

It's kind of making me want to uninstall the latest version and go back to a previous version a la Github.

The cost of some of the early unlocks (the basics like agriculture starting unlocks, forge, armorworks, etc... the barebones basics ) could be lower

I'd also like to see actual research discs being loot items (not just the condensed research but the actual 500 research disc, etc) on higher tier loot charts.

Maybe even add a guaranteed drop of research items/points for certain mobs (such as have minikog scientists drop research points/items)

the timegates, it's not a bloody mobile game

The biggest issue with research is that as far as I can tell, the research points don't generate properly. It's supposed to be the case that you gain <Threat Level> + <Research Bonus> points per second, but <Threat Level> is always treated as being 1, so most of the time you only gain 1 point, with a maximum of 4 points if you have the max research bonus from playing several hours. However, the code to disable research point gain when AFK also doesn't work, so you can just leave the game running for like 10 hours while your character is in a bed to generate research points.

In general, I like the research system, but this needs to be fixed. I also think it's the case that most early game things actually cost too few research points, I had an absurd surplus until near the endgame, when I started having to AFK farm them.

The research system overhaul pretty much killed the mod for me. Now it's mandatory for everything AND is extremely and pointlessly grindy.
KitsuneKas Jun 1, 2021 @ 12:23pm
The research system is definitely the worst addition to FU. I just came back to give starbound another shot recently, and found out that my favorite mod had been bogged down to the point of being a complete grind.

I played with FU before, but have now stripped it out of my modlist. I'm desperately looking for alternatives to FU's gear, planets, and races right now, and it's sad to see that no one's really made any simpler FU alternatives for a lot of those things.

It's the really distasteful stuff like edible turds that gets on my nerves.
Though I haven't seen any of those for quite a few updates.

there is no way to remove it and keep playing your save. back up your world if you want to keep it. otherwise, remove FU and all the compatibility mods and you should be able to make a non-FU world

I was going to make a cruel joke, but I'll abstain.

The thing I dislike the most has already been mentioned, the research time gating. Annoying and pointless. I hate when I can feel the pace being artificially forced on me.

I also dislike that they, especially Sayter, have an odd perspective on "balancing" content.

However, the benefits of the mod far surpass the issues I have with it, so removing it is not an option for me. I do keep a backup version in case they ever go somewhere I am absolutely unwilling to put up with, which it may very well happen at this point.

It never really bothered me but I always felt like there was something wrong with the balancing, I can't quite put my finger on why, it's kind of a mess to be honest.

I tried getting back into FU recently, everything was going well and I was really having fun up until the Erchius Mining Facility, the enemy spam in that mission is rough, thank ♥♥♥♥ that's optional. Instead of clever enemy placement, you get wailed on by 7 or so randomly placed enemies at the same time, it's not a very fun mission, I never died to it but it's kinda tedious.
