I can't figure out how to invite someone else.

I'm trying to play this with my wife but nothing seems to happen. I click the '+' type her name in, and click invite and nothing happens. I've tried her steam name, her character name. I'm typing it exactly as it is and nothing happens.

When you start a game, you can enter the Steam Overlay with Shift+Tab, and right click on them, choosing Invite to Game. Or they can right click you, and chose Join Game.
Once they are in, the + icon in-game at the top left, is a party system. Enter their exact character's name and hit invite. (:

Do I need to be running a dedicated server for this to work? I got it working but it doesnt seem like I'm doing this right. Right now, I start a dedicated server on my machine, I join with my loopback IP and then my wife joins via my local ip since we are both on the same router. I was trying to use my public ip which is, needless to say, wrong.

You don't have to start a dedicated server. Start a single player game. Invite your wife, or tell her to click on your profile and join the game. That's how easy it is. So.

1)Start a normal single player game.
2)Your wife joins.
3)You two have fun playing.
