Setting up a base!
Anyone have any tips for choosing a base location? Or is it best to just do it where you spawn? Also was wonder if they have implimented a way to save your spawn point to your house?

Well, I think its best to set up your surface base near your teleport location, cause if you die you'll always (in the recent beta versions) come back to your spaceship.

yeah thats true, im hoping they add something where you can port to you base.

Hum i still found no reason to even make a base.

Living in the ship seems easier and better.

best to do it on your ship in my opinion

if you find a planet with some traders, mightr be good idea to make that your home plaanet, so you can farm food there and stuff.

I set mine up where I spawn so that I beam directly into my house.

It's mostly empty though. I prefer to set most of my base up aboard my ship so that all the crafting stations are there for when I'm visiting other planets.

Yeah setting up a base has no real practical purpose except to look cool. And maybe having more space for storing stuff. Even though you can perfectly do it on your ship.
Your spaceship is your first base. Which is kind of cool, and will be even more when we will be able to upgrade ships and drive huge ones.

I think it would be cool if we could craft teleport pads or beacons, and place them on the surface, perhaps name them.. then when we could choose which one we want to port to when teleporting down from the ship... Then we could mark several points of interest once we find them, and have easy access to them whenever we want.

That's planned.

Yeah. Definitely better off using your ship. Planet-side bases are more for farming/looking cool. Waste of resources to keep the crafting stuff on them as you'll have to fly back and forth every time you want to craft something. At least in this stage of the game.

At somepoint in the end game you'll likely want to have a home planet filled with your own merchants/NPC's/neat stuff, but early game you are essentially the intergalactic version of a homeless dude living out of his van (down by the river).

The (not yet released) human mothership already looks promising:

According to the Starbound-Wiki it is a ship which can be found as texture in the Starbounder-Assets but isn´t integrated yet.
See here (last entry):

However I am aware of the mod that lets you expand your ship (but never saw it create such a huge thing)

I like building bases on planets. Who wants to be cramped into a ship all the time? Designing your own base is half the fun.

That was created by a player, and it's a photoshop.

Somebody posted that the other day on these forums from their steam screenshot account in a "show your ship" thread. I assumed it was that mod but looking closer at it you can see it's not even using game assets.

Well, I just looked in the game assets and it is de facto there ...
...\Starbound\assets\ships\human

It is a set of 4 .pngs called dropshipBR, dropshipBL, dropshipUR and dropshipUL

You can find it in your own assets folder as well, together with pngs of other unseen models ;)

I have built several bases, but mor for the fun of it than any practicality I was making one at the beam point of every planet I found.

But, the nature of the game and all the traveling it is best to keep everything on ship, trying to get creative in such a small place kind of sucks at the moment though lol.

Being able to design our own ship or at least have a larger "hull" that we can design the inside of would be cool. Perhaps we will be able to attract a crew as well, such as was done with the NPC's of Terraria.
