Matter manipulator > Copper pickaxe?
right click to remove background tiles.
put cursor in the middle of a 3x3 grid to remove 9 blocks at a time.
Surely not ... the pickaxe is superior to the matter manipulator.
The only thing for which the matter manipulator is good (after getting a pickaxe and a normal axe) is for occasional cases where you want to destroy parts, that are out of the reach of your normal pickaxe (the matter manipulator seems to have a slightly larger reach than axe/pickaxe)
Don't forget the MM is the thing you're using to place items if you look. At least it explains how you can reach several meters away unlike Terraria where you had telekinesis or something.
