What is the point of building a house?
Sorry for bringing up Terraria again, but in Terraria you had one world with "one" spawn point. You built a nice home which made shelter from the bad guys at night, and you had the NPC's moving in as well, effectively making a small village.
In Starbound the planets (worlds) are smaller with a limit set of resources (wood and coal), so you tend to travel a lot between planets to get more resources and better gear.
Is there actually any point building a nice home on one planet (there is a lot of decoration items which can be used in this game) since you will be travelling a lot and probably don't want to spend unnecessary coal and wood just to get back to your home planet?

well you could make a HUGE storage unit to of course store things from your journeys

I think right now it's just for decoration in what you tag as your "Home" planet.. But otherwise, I've not figured out a point to building a house because your ship makes a good shelter.

I imagine, or maybe hope is a better word, that as development time goes on there will be much more a reason to establish a home.

Oh! If a dev is reading this... My suggestion to increase the "attractiveness" of building a home would be having that home ALWAYS accessable via a 2nd teleporter on the ship. Right now, pay a bunch of fuel to go to explore new plannet, then to say, make a quick trip home to drop something off, you have to spend double fuel (Round trip) to go there and then come back. If your home planet is "always available", then there's much more reason to establish a permanent home... Just a random though brought on by lack of sleep... don't mind me!

Thanks for the answers.
@Salt
My thoughts exactly. I really hope the devs reads your post (and of course do something about it) :-)

I'd honestly like to be able to make notes and connect them to planets, maybe have a little log as well which keeps my notes and just clicking on them would allow me to fly to the location. Also, maybe a ship upgrade which picks up radio signals, so i can see which planets have towns/inhabitation, though not what kind! Maybe later on let you see what kind of inhabitents and the level of occupation their in with more upgrades :p

Good suggestions you should check Playstarbound.com and see if they're there and up vote them if they are. If not make a suggestion.(warning the suggestion page has about 300+ pages of things to vote on. They are catagorized though)

Fuel stops being an issue the moment you put any effort into it. Clear cutting a single mediumish forest planet takes like an hour and gives you enough wood to fuel you ship for hundreds jumps, then you get much more powerful fuels later like uranium, plutonium and solarium. I still travel back to my starter planet with my large castle and storage facilities after every couple planets explored and long after reach t10 I still have half the wood left from what I cut down on my starter planet, with hundreds of uranium and plutonium and dozens of solarium ready to go.

Stargates would be fun though.

Thanks for the info about getting new fuels, I was wondering about this big time as 50% of my time on planets now is cutting down all the trees, which is a bit much, and a whole planet worth of trees doesn't come close to stocking my ship for hundreds of jumps, several more like.

I also agree with the OP in that not only does it seem like a waste of wood to go back to your home planet after you've stripped it bare of trees, but who wants to make a planet stripped of trees their home planet?

I got over 7000 wood from my smallish starter planet, each wood is 1 fuel. Intersystem jumps are like 50 fuel, cross sector jumps are like 200. I tend to go to systems with multiple planets I want to explore, so I can hit 3-4 planets and get back home in 600 fuel spread out over 5 jumps, not too far off from a hundred jumps.

Fortunally there is a lot of coal and wood on the surface of most planets, so traveling is not that hard.
Its important to remember you guys that your true home is YOUR SHIP. In the future it will be able to upgrade ships and make them bigger, even with NPCS living on it. My ship is where I keep all the crafting items and store my stuff.

Also, you can spawn npc´s and guards whenever you want, with the help of an item (which you craft). I imagine in the future we will be able to spawn traders also. I havent tried, but maybe you can even spawn one npc inside your ship already.

And I agree, there must be some kind of note system, so planets explored can be remembered for something they are special about.

Lol, the ship is to small for a base.

The only thing i have in it is ALOOT of large wooden crates for transport.
Astasia Dec 8, 2013 @ 10:13am
You can already spawn traders, you just need to find the spawners in chests. You can spawn all these in your home base as well though AFAIK. I wouldn't put an NPC on your ship ATM unless you block them off away from the teleport pad. You often swing your weapon while you are being reanimated and can accidenally kill people on your ship.
Kraggoth Dec 8, 2013 @ 10:13am
You can sort of create your own towns with the NPC spawners too.

Can you grow crops on your ship? Likely not, then you need a home planet to grow them on lest you drive yourself insane with crops growing all over the sector.
maestro Dec 8, 2013 @ 10:17am
Wow I woulda never thought to try that, glad I inquired about it.

Until ships become modifiable/buildable, building homes on planets remains the primary outlet for architectural artistry in the game. Once players are able to do the same with their ships, they will move their artistic vision there instead. (in essence, taking their castle with them from planet to planet without rebuilding it)

Of course, I'm no artist, so all my shelters are just two-three story rectangles. Buildable ships will probably be lost on me. : /
