Starbound has an advantage over Terraria in:
Exploration
There are many many other planets to go to, many different types of biomes and even exploring your starter planet can take hours, if you even try to go to the atmospheric height or to the planet's core.
There's NPC villages, outposts, lone merchants etc scattered around the Starbound universe, and even as we speak, players are mapping planets' coordinates and their inhabitants and contents.
There's random dungeons with enemies, elites and bosses. For a 2D sandbox explorer enthusiast, dream come true.
Building
There are more options and customizations of how you want to decorate your buildings in Starbound due to the different cultural decors of different races, or you might even want to try inter-racial decorations.
In my personal opinion, building in Starbound is more streamlined and more fun as compared to Terraria.
Combat
For the most parts of the combat system, there are not much differences between the two games except that Starbound has more fluid animations and is more visually appealing (at least to me) than Terraria. Not to mention Tech (skills) and unique weapon built-in functions.
The pace for Starbound starts off slow as you will be struggling with the mechanics as there is no real tutorial. There are great beginners guide made by some helpful members of the community out there which will be beneficial to anyone.
Terraria is still my first love. However, Starbound is manifesting to be what I (and possibly many other players) had hoped and wanted for Terraria.
Looking forward to Starbound's future development and Terraria 2.0!
Hope my post helps.
Pros;
-World connection is smooth and contained within a universe. (No need for multi-world mods)
-Better choice of difficulty. You can freely move between any unlocked sectors and tiers, and always step out of the harder stuff for a more casual experience.
-Six current races to pick from.
-Plenty of unique content related to races that can later be shared between friends...armors, weapons, etc...
-Instruments and custom music you can have them play. (Includes a band feature)
-Plenty of different biomes, and even similar biomes can be colored differently at times.
-Random monsters and weapons to discover.
-Mining can take 3x3 sqaures, rather than 1x1.
-Several dungeon types and villages to see.
-Customizable villages by crafting spawners related to your race.
Cons;
-Still in development, so plenty of unfinished content.
-Difficulty curve to learning the game.
-Game isn't balanced yet nor optimized.
-Character wipes to be expected during Beta.
-Plenty 'o bugs.
-No solid end-game yet.
What to look forward too:
-Space ships you can customize and upgrade.
-More races. (Novakid planned for release)
-Full Story told through quests.
-Randomly generated quests from NPCs.
-Possible space battles FTL style.
-Mods and lots of them.
-Full progression system and completed tiers of equipment and worlds.
-Vehicles. (One mech currently in)
-Creative mode (Director mode) that allows your standard creative tools and other features like taking control of NPCs and talking through them with custom quests. (Great for server events!)
This is just off the top of my head, but you need to keep in mind that everything is subject to change. The game still has it's own flaws, and current XP and some MACs are having trouble running the game. If you don't mind an unfinished and possibly messy game, and this kind of thing appeals to you than it may be a good investment.
You also have a voice in the development in the game while it's still in beta as the devs are really community friendly.
Sample:
"by Hiraki Corale, Hylotl adventurer
Turns out the Apex resistance fellows are rather nice! They've given me a room of my own, and even locked the door in case the Miniknog storm in and endanger me. So thoughtful!",
"Earlier, I pulled out my rocket launcher to show them the type of weaponry the should be considering, and it caused such a ruckus! I've never seen Apex get so excited. One of them was so eager he tried to grab it from me, and we had a little accident involving an RPG and the front of the HQ."
