Can't seem to get any, being an old terraria player not being able to craft anything is a pain in the ass. Why doesn't the player start with at LEAST an axe so you can get the first quest completed, or am I missing something here? Mainly frustrated, all I can do right now is run around and kill baddies.

Chop the tree down with the matter manipulator beam.

You can use the manipulator to cut down trees. It does take a while though. Also, not sure how common this is, but I didn't have any trees in the vicinity of my starting point, only really tall plants that dropped plant fibers. I had to run to the side for about 5 minutes before I actually found a tree.
