THANK YOU!!! JUST THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
I know how you feel...I kept getting spanked by mobbies trying to get meat but kept getting leather and my crops kept getting destroyed by my own hand *cries* your tip will be a big help in the future! :D
Why don't they drop flesh when killed using the sword?
Thanks! Wow, such great information!
-To spite what the game may have you believe, the distress beacon is not a prerequisite for traveling to other planets, just to traveling out of your "sector" (difficulty range). Coal works as fuel.
-If you craft a one-handed weapon and put it in the L or R slot, you can put a flashlight in the other and use both at the same time, as well as swap quickly to your weapon at any time by pressing X
-There are a lot of possible "friendly" npcs that spawn with houses, storage, or other things near them. I'm not sure if they attack you for taking their stuff, but if you see them get killed by something (which happens reasonably often) you can take it for yourself... or you can just kill them yourself, if you're a jerk :P This got me 5 diamonds really close to my starting point. It seems like this is the main way to get a lot of unique decorations and blocks, as well.
-Right-click zooms out on the starship navigation.
-An upgraded weapon or bow (one of the first iron ones) can be a good investment as it can often one-shot a lot of surface aliens on a starting planet, getting you your pixels back fast.
-Harvest plant fibres whenever possible and weave them into bandages (your only portable health kit at first)
And a few multiplayer tips:
-There's a compass by your friend's portrait when in a party, constantly pointing in their direction.
-You and a party member can have ships on different planets and can quickly travel between the two by beaming to each others ships.
-The rescue beacon boss flies away if not in combat with someone for a little while, so if you're fighting it with someone, try to make sure one person is alive at all times.
also, if you want to explore a cave which is filled with water, try to break/mine the background and the water will vanish out of the hole.
for the UFO Boss, just make a bunker with holes in the ceiling to shoot arrows at him.
I started off with 4 wheat seeds.
I used a hoe to break the ground, then planted the seeds.
After a while, the wheat plants matured. I used E to harvest them, and ended up with 4 wheat and 6 wheat seeds.
I re-planted those seeds, and repeated the process whenever I noticed that my wheat plants were ripe.
Now I have over 500 wheat seeds, and I carry something like 250 bread with me at all times.
Bread is really good because it stops your hunger and also heals you!
Whenever I run into something that is really hurting me badly I just scoff lots of bread while running away.
Also, sky highways are a great way to cover lots of distance across the landscape safely and quickly.
If you've been mining for a while you've probably got a couple of thousand dirt blocks in your inventory.
Throw them into your hotbar, and then hold shift to place them one at a time instead of in a 2x2 block.
Just build a gentle slope up into the sky and once you're above the tops of the trees, just run it straight across.

Once you start running low on dirt, just start building your road back down towards the ground in a gentle slope.
It's a much safer way to travel since monsters tend not to spawn up there, only birds. and as a bonus you can use the long straight sections as wheat farms!
