FIX: IF YOU ARE GETTING ERROR: "Access violation detected at ..."
1. Open Explorer
2. Navigate to your game in steam folder: ...Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\win32
3. Right click starbound.exe
4. Click Properties
5. Open Compatibility tab
6. Make sure to check "Run this program as an administrator"
7. Also in compatibility mode check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
8. Select Windows 7
9. Repeat the same for "starbound_opengl.exe"
10. Repeat the same for "launcher/launcher.exe"

Windows 7 x64 here. Same access violations which prevented me from getting past the Chucklefish logo.

What fixed it for me was clearing compatibility mode altogether for my steam executable.
For some reason my steam.exe was stuck in Vista compatibility mode (and was greyed out - so I couldn't edit the setting...odd).

After deleting a registry key to clear the forced compatibility setting, and resetting the property to its default flag (unchecked), I was able to launch the game client and get passed the Chucklefish logo successfully.

The specific key address was: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers\C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe

Keep in mind this was a very specific problem and may not apply to you (be careful if you decide to mess around in your registry), it's just what fixed it for me.

Good luck!

**Also, steam.exe and all my Starbound executables are set to "run as admin" as well.

I tired this, and now I can't even click Launch Starbound (64Bit) on the launcher.

Same error as Sinon, Except on windows 7
Error only occurs after the game finishes loading onto the main menu, Usually results in the main menu not appearing at all before the crash, Other times the crash doesn't occur, Which is when I DO reach the main menu

Guys this was a fix from back in 2013, when your game doesn't work now you're just ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

This poor thread has been necro-ed so many times now, even I think it should be allowed to rest in peace.

i don't have launcher

I know this thread is ancient, but it's still being commented on and is high on Google's search priority, so I thought I'd post another fix. I just helped two different people with this issue, and the problem was being caused by a program called Spacedesk. Spacedesk adds a Mac-esque Dock to your desktop, and the method it does so with breaks the game, causing fatal errors. Try removing Spacedesk if you have it.
