The dreaded "I can't connect to a friend's server" issue
I've done a lot of reading on this issue over the last 24 hours, and I'm a bit frustrated with why I can't seem to figure this out.

I'm hosting a server locally for a friend and myself to play on. I'm able to successfully launch a local server, and I know the server is working because I am able to connect using my local IP address (192.168.1.xxx). I'm very familiar with server administration and port forwarding, and I've done everything I've seen suggested. I've forward port 21025 for my local IP via TCP. I've forwarded 21025-21027, TCP, UPD, and both. I don't use Windows Firewall since I make use of a hardware firewall via my router.

I've restarted my router. I've restarted my computer. My local and internet IP have not changed. I've disabled my router firewall and I'm still unable to connect. I took the advice of another user and changed the server configuration file to use something other than port 21025 and haven't had any luck.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'd appreciate any help. The Starbound forums have a few suggestions topics, but there are tons of folks that have posted similar issues without finding any solutions for themselves. In short, there are a lot of people out there like me and it's frustrating.

The only issue with this solution is that everyone that ever wanted to join my server would have to download this software and that's not a realistic solution for me. Thank you though.

When me and my friends LAN we just put in the Local IP (192.168.0.x) of whoevers machine is hosting, leave the other boxes blank and it works fine. Have you tried forcing the port 192.168.0.X:12025 etc ?? You shouldn't have to but worth a shot.

This friend is not local. They are using my internet IP to access my server.

Why not? Quite simple XD Easy to install.

Well if thats the case they need your Routers IP address which shouldn't start 192.168 I believe. Google "Find my IP" then add :12025 on the end should work.

I've shared my internet IP with my friend, and they've attempted to connect using both my internet IP and internet IP plus the port number and receive the same error message: "Join failed Error Connecting to (IP Address):21025"

This is the part where everyone else I've read gets stuck. As far as my past knowledge of hosting Minecraft and Terraria servers tells me, I've done everything right. I don't know what I could be missing here.

Ha ha that's how I know how to sort it out XD IF you can connect and they can't then it'd be down to the router. Have you portforwarded 12025,12026 and 12027 ?? And running an unedited config ??

I agree. If I can connect locally I know the server is operational. It has to be some sort of port settings or the like.

Are the ports not 21025-21027?

Also, I have no edited the configuation at all except to test other port configuations, but I've returned the default port to 21025 in the server configuration.

Yeah typo. If you have firewall built into your router, do you have to make an exception to the firewall as well as port-forward ?? Have you tried with upnpforwarding set as "False", Get everyone to verify assets too see if that fixes something perhaps.

Have you any mods installed, do your friends ??

I know you've said you don't use it but check windows firewall too just incase. (I was going round in circles with Terraria down to this, even though I don't use it)

I just tested connecting with my American friend and everything was fine so i'm stumped too.

Triple check everything. Good luck.

Try to disable upnp in the starbound config.

This! A THOUSAND TIMES this. Disable the Upnp in the Starbound.config. I have only 21025 forwarded and it works like a charm. Try not adding the port to the end of the address when trying to connect, as well. I had it throw me an error when connecting to a friend like that. I then removed the port from the end and it worked like a charm.

I disabled universalpnp in both config files. No dice. I've had them try both with and without the port attached. Still not working.

same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ issue. It doesn't make sense. Only one of my friends has gotten it to work and we
're all doing the same steps

OOOoookkk, after much frustration my issue is solved.

Comcast is my ISP, and I lease a modem from them. The modem has its own firewall and port forwarding system. I tried disabling the firewall in the modem itself and this didn't work.

So, I had to enable the port forwarding system in the modem itself and forward the correct ports to the modem IP (which was 10.0.0.2). This finally did the trick. I was able to access the modem using the IP 10.0.0.1.

This was an unbranded modem issued to me by Comcast only identified by saying XFinity on it.
