You would know about it if you follow the indie stuff as much as i do, this is coming from someone enjoy indie more than "AAA" games these days..
It would probably have less than half its player base If it weren't for twitch/youtube or the flashy banner in the steam store page.
Praise the game as it is, I do, but the PR-departments is severely lacking.
You can find dungeons, underground futuristic temples, old temples, prisons in the jungle/forest, villages from race 'X' or 'Y' where you can buy stuff or kill them and steal their furniture, there are underground secret labs and tons of other buildings/dungeons to get items.
All that combined with the fact that it's more than just what minecraft or terraria is, it's also a RPG with some important RPG features like quests & bosses.
Chucklefish did a great job creating Starbound, that only for €14. I even am sad that I bought the 14 EUR version after seeing this site: http://playstarbound.com/store/ Would've payed the Diamond package to support them even more because they deserve it.
Naw. It's in the top ten most played because Terraria was a massive success, and people looking for something similar to it have Starbound as an option: newer, with better animations and art, more items, races, etc. It's still in Beta but I already prefer it over Terraria.
For me , it is just awesome , no other words <3
but your right the PR is a bit lacking. However it does have the best kind of PR, Its Community (I'm not talking about the steam forums here)
Currently I got the best crafted set of armor and weapons though :V
