How to turn wood into coal?

i've seen several topics talking about how you can 'smelt' 10 wood into coal, but nothing i've tried works.. nothing happens in the furnace, or the campfire, no recipies i see on the anivl or workbench. i have a serious coal shortage on my planet.. i can barely keep a small stock of torches on hand, let alone the hundreds i need to get to another planet =( yet i have like 3k wood

You may be thinking of Minecraft. In minecraft you can turn raw wood to charcoal but I haven't heard anything about that in Starbound.

are you sure? i've read the wood/coal thing on this board. lots of topics were saying '10 wood into coal' but nobody seems to explain how

The latest patch allows you to turn 10 wood into coal. I assume - because I haven't tried - that you do it through the Refinery, not the Forge.

No. go find some coal. or hit some unrefined trees for fuel. one is never stuck

ok didnt know u could do this but if u smelt refined wood u get coal :) just tested it - hugs again for a positive question

zero, you cant use wood as fuel for the ship anymore. or else i would not be having this problem

You can't find any coal? I just started a new character, and my planet has plenty of coal

Ok i just tried it. I put a huge stack of unrefined wood in the smelter and i was able to make coal. 10 to 1 ratio

I think what the OP did was not start a new character. The patch says that u have to start anew for it to work!

I seem to have the same problem of being unable to smelt wood into coal with the furnace. I just checked and I'm currently using the newest patch (v. Indignant Koala) which is supposed to have the "smelt-wood-into-coal" but it seems no matter what I do, the unrefined wood just won't smelt into coal. Any ideas anyone?

It's a game with randomly generated worlds. Just think about what that means for a minute.

I've been finding more gold and silver than coal. Looks like cutting down trees and burning them to coal is the way to go until they fix it
