Farming Chili
I've had chili sitting in my farm for ~3-4 in game days and they don't seem to be growing (it's in the same stage as when I planted it.)

Are there specific conditions that need to be met for it to grow? Or does it just have a stupidly long grow time?

Better yet, what are the mechanics behind farming? Do plants grow when you're not in proximity? When you're in your ship? When you're not even in that solar system?

You have to be on the planets surface for plants to grow as far as I know.

Chili does grow eventually, takes a while. Nothing special needs to be done.

Crops on a planet only grow when you are nearby, which as far as I can tell is within several screens. Crops on a ship I'm not entirely sure about, they don't grow the whole time you are on the planet, but they do grow some. It might be like the ship stays loaded for 5 minutes or so when you beam down and the plants keep growing in that period.

some plants are not yet functional, and some are just buggy, for example last patch occulomon seeds just didnt grow for me no mater what biome i put them in or above below with sun and without sunlight no grwoth, where as wheat is like ♥♥♥♥♥♥ candy in terms of growth it is very fast, boltseeds grow some times and sometimes like automatos tehy wont grow if ♥♥♥♥ is planted close to them, rice seems to grow fine, stuff grows while in space but slower due to the time dilation effect of space travel

ahhh so thats what it is, thing is though ive come back to a world and my wheat and rice and tomatoes had grown when i came back some hours(IRL) later

I never had a problem with ocumelons either, I planted some on day one and got them to grow, they took a lot longer than say wheat though.

The only thing I've tried and haven't gotten to grow are crystal plants.

Those crops grow quickly and maybe the area of the planet where you beamed out stays loaded for a few minutes like ships do.

I can plant some fast growing crops though then head down to the planet core and come back to find they haven't even sprouted yet.

Hm... this would make sense.

I spend most of my time mining near the lava pits, so the crops would be well away from my character.

I kinda wish it wasn't like this. That way I can go off and do my own thing, come back, harvest, replant, then go off and do my own thing. Repeat.

Ah well. Thanks.

Since we talking about farming, and have not tested this yet... Can crops be grown underground?
Astasia Dec 11, 2013 @ 3:17pm
Yes. They can grow anwhere.

If you have to be near your crops for them to grow, that is very lame; who wants to just sit and stare at their plants for hours on end?

By 'Near' being at the bottom layer of a large planet and my crops at the other end, They seemed to grow just fine. Just don't go offworld if you want them to grow.

That wasn't the case the last time I tried. The difference in distance between the bottom and top of a large or even medium planet was too great and the surface unloaded. They may have changed this since though, I dunno. There's a fair amount of mining you can do in the middle layers of the planets though to keep your crops growing. Typically my crops are only growing when I'm standing around my base doing other stuff though, which is why it's handy to have a really large farm making that "enough" to keep you fed.

Somehow i found out Chili grows faster in the Darkness, i had an nice underground farm and was about to leave my Planet and after taking my Light Sources my Chili suddendly grows.

No one's brought this up yet, so I will

Does the type of dirt used influence crop growth rates? I.E. Is green dirt better than brown dirt?
Faya AOP Dec 30, 2013 @ 9:05pm
From what i can tell..no.
ohener Dec 30, 2013 @ 10:12pm
Plants on your ship do seem to continue growing while you are away, so you could try that.

Also, different crops do have different growth rates. Most crops only take 10 minutes to grow while, according to the wiki, chili takes 2 hours to become fully grown.

If you ever run into merchants selling crops I would recommend just buying a ton of ingredients there instead of trying to farm. Farming seriously sucks right now.
