Btw games just like this come out on the consoles anyways, so whats the difference, they dont use keyboards. Please think.
Youre right man, i just assume people online are trolling. Sorry. Still i think a controller would suffice. In pinnacle it is set so that if you hit triangle itll bring up inventory then with the d pad you can pick the item then the right trigger selects, As far as crafting aslong as you have the materials in the inventory you just pull up craft by either hovering the cursor over the table/anvil/forge etc then hit the sqaure button itll bring up the lists, so. sqaure is action triangle is inventory, circle jumps, x attacks, the analogs and movent and left right up down view the r1r2 l1l2 buttoms cycle through the 1-10 bar, Also you can set the buttons to any action you want. You can completely remap the controller to the functions of the game. You should check it out.
Chances are they'd need to throw some radial menus in to maintain a similar level of speed and efficiency on a much more basic scheme. Not to mention that I expect aiming the cursor for digging/placing anywhere besides your max range would be a chore (though I suppose that it didn't stop Terraria from having console versions).
Aiming would definitely be much harder without some lock-on. Along with the delayed transition between running and back-stepping due to aim. Not to mention fidgety accidental activations of energy dash etc.
I'm not really against controller-usage in any capacity. I value the PCs ability to use all peripherals than just one flexible combination. But this is one game where you probably are far better off just doing things the traditional way.
You know what's even better than a keyboard? Using analog sticks to type on an onscreen keyboard.
They do make keyboards that attach to xbox and ps3 controllers and microphone support could be implemented, also if youre playing multiplayer right now chances are the server youre on has a raid/ts/vent server info immediatly on screen.
And the analogs arent really needed for much aside from moving and looking left right up and down the other actions are just button clicks..
LB / RB / LT / RT (4)
A / B / X / Y (4)
D-Pad is 4 or 8 depending on if you use the Diagonal as a separate input which many games do
Each Analog stick is also a button with a click (2)
Start and Back (Select) (2)
I understand that some folks are keyboard and mouse people, that's great, I would never suggest that a game (or anything for that matter) not provide a control scheme that someone enjoys using. In truth, I'm pretty confused as to why consoles don't support them as valid forms on input, I support bringing Keyboard and Mouse to console all the way even though I would NEVER touch it, but who am I to tell someone how to enjoy their game ? I fully support things like control schemes for disabled gamers and providing colour options for those with colour blindness issues. Anything to get more people playing. Games are for every one to enjoy, not just a certain segment of people based on the control scheme they use.
No one is asking for balancing to 'fit' a controller, they (we, I suppose) would just like to see official controller support because when it's integrated, it's just works better than using 3rd party tools to accomplish the same thing. Jerm is now using 3rd party software to use a controller as well as some of my friends and they are happy with it (more or less). Official support just makes things easier for everyone (I don't like installing excess software on my, mostly, dedicated PC gaming computer).
For instance, in my opinion, Engine Software absolutely nailed the controls for Terraria on console. I prefer the controller scheme over k/m any day of the week. But that's me, I completely understand that other people feel more comfortable with a Keyboard and Mouse and I would never ask for that to be taken away.
Fact is PC people, the controller is here to stay, and with Steam Box, it's only going to become more prevalent in PC gaming.
